Pleasantly surprised to see Skyler Brind'Amour potting some goals. He has 13 on the season, placing him behind only Robidas (20) and Nadeau (18). He seems to be benefiting from a high shooting percentage, but those are still solid results.

Valimaki looks to be fitting in nicely...some nice insurance on D when needed to go along with the return of Legault!

As well as the Wolves are playing, the Gargoyles are not. There are only 3 Canes contracts on the roster, dman Bryce Montgomery and goalies Ruslan Khazheyev and Nikita Quapp. Montgomery has bounced between Chicago and Greesnboro and has only played 18 games for the Gargoyles. They’re last in the ECHL with 36 points in 52 games. They’ve won 15 games and have 6 OT or shootout losses.

IIRC the Gargoyles’ front office was kind of late coming together so the roster was kind of cobbled together on the fly. They didn’t sign a single player until late July and were starting from scratch instead of building on an existing roster. Pretty normal for first year outfits in the ECHL to be a bit behind the curve, and it doesn’t help them that Carolina’s minor league pool is so thin … since half of their prospect pool is in Russia

Charlie Cerrato is back in the lineup for Penn St. tonight.
I wonder if the Canes will push to sign him this summer. They’ve got a lot of their AHL group heading to either RFA or UFA status and will have some icetime at that level to fill. Cerrato certainly started to look the part this year.

Chicago Wolves last week:

Mar 3 @Milwaukee W 4-3 Primeau with the win. Valimaki, Seeley, Nikita Pavlychev, and Nadeau with the goals.
Mar 7 Texas L 4-2 Primeau with the loss. Nikita Pavlychev and Viktor Neuchev with the goals
Mar 8 Texas L 7-6 (Shootout) Miftakhov with the loss. Fensore, Valimaki, Gunler, Brind'Amour, Cal Foote and Nadeau with the goals. Shootout shooters were Nadeau, Unger Sorum and Suzuki. Only Nadeau scored.

Chicago is now 28-13-12, 2nd in the Central division. 10 points ahead of 3rd place Manitoba and Texas.

3 Games this week. Wed v. Iowa, Fri @Rockford, Sun v. Grand Rapids

Looking at the group in Chicago, with everybody having played around 50 games now, it’s worth pointing out the point producers. Nadeau leads in goals with 24 and has 49 points in 44 games. Robidas is their points leader and has been clicking along with 51 points in his 50 games. Unger Sorem is the leading assist guy with 37 and he’s got 48 points in 53 games. All three of them have basically stayed healthy as well, which is nice. Fensore (31 points in 44 games) and Valimaki (21 points in 25 games) are the only consistent point producers among the D, with Valimaki the only real goal threat. Of course, Valimaki has over 270 NHL games, so he’s not a prospect, per se. More of a depth option. In net, Primeau and Miftakhov have basically settled in as the rotation and Primeau (2.58 GAA, .910 Save %) has been more consistent than Miftakhov (3.30 GAA, .887 Save %) in pretty much equal usage.

Bottom line … the Wolves’s best prospects have largely been their best players, which is good to see. And Valimaki looks like a useful pickup, although he's out of contract at the end of the season. He could be an option for Carolina’s No. 7 role next year depending on how things go. He’s adjusted well to the scheme, has good size and good wheels. Nadeau has that massive shot and really needs to be in the NHL next year, while they have settled on Unger Sorum in a setup winger role and abandoned that experiment using him as a center. He’s also got to be close to NHL-ready. Robidas it’s harder to peg. He doesn’t really have an NHL frame and doesn’t have anything else in his tool kit to compensate … like Nadeau’s shot. And speaking of guys who lack an NHL frame, there’s little Fensore. Not sure what to make of his value to the big club because no matter how you slice it, the dude is tiny.

And then there’s Legault and Nystrom who are kind of straight forward defenders who have proved their NHL potential but don’t really produce counting stats. Both are under contract for next season (and beyond in Nystrom’s case), which is good. Quality depth on D is always good.

Not sure Miftakhov will get another North American contract as he’s 25 and doesn’t look likely to be an NHL keeper. Primeau is tricky. He’s a UFA this summer and has once again proven to be a capable AHLer who may not quite be NHL level even as a backup. He was awful in Toronto, after all. He’s 26 and also unlikely to have another gear, but you never know I guess. Stranger things have happened … recently. Problem bieng, if you re-sign him then you’re probably going to have to waive him again, and that’s been an adventure.

Ryabkin is far too skilled to be playing in the QMJHL but not quite ready yet for the AHL. It's a bummer that his CHL rights were held by a QMJHL team and not an OHL team where defense actually exists.

I don't know what the right thing to do with him will be next season. I guess back to the AHL, he has to work through the challenges of the NA pro game at some point.

From the limited amount I've seen Ryabkin play, he is wildly creative and skilled, but easily knocked around and frustrated. Oh, and if he is ever going to play for the Canes, he is going have to be willing to backcheck. Basically one of those guys who flashes NHL top 6 skills but has a long way to go before he is given a chance to actually earn that spot.
