2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

So … yeah. That one is probably going to be tough to explain on your resume when you’re out looking for a new job. That said, Brad Treliving keeps getting hired, so …

I am not sure I have seen a trade that bad in a while. How he still has a job at the end of the week tells you all you need to know about how that Chicago org has plummeted since their cup days of 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Basically every media outlet made noises about Chicago being willing to trade that pick for NHL help, but maybe Davidson didn’t get the memo that he could just use the pick if he didn’t get a decent offer.

Chicago needs better players, and certainly Byram is better than any other DMan on their roster. But are you really telling me just the 4th overall pick wasn't enough to get Byram? Taking Greenway from Buffalo AND including a 2nd round pick and Crevier in the deal was required as well?

Congrats to Buffalo, that was an absolute haul. Chicago? Sheesh, what the heck are you doing?

Don’t forget, Tulsky was rumored to be the other finalist when the Blackhawks hired Davidson. Thank God they chose poorly.

Is Paul Fenton consulting in the Blackhawks front office? This trade approaches Nino for Rask in terms of sheer stupidity.

Davidson has done this crap before … throwing in WAY too much to screw up his end of a perfectly normal deal. He’s the one who pretty much gave Hall to Carolina when all he was doing was eating some salary to make somebody else’s deal work out. That Rantanen to Dallas deal 100% happened without Hall in it.

Yeah, Byram is a good get. The 4th overall is WAY too much for him, but I at least understand the argument. But the rest of it? Why? Greenway is a goonie guy who can play a little, but is WAY overpaid for what he does and is only going to make more on his next deal … probably somewhere else because he does you no good at Chicago’s stage of the curve. Taking that dumb contract and throwing in the 2nd looks like killing a fly with a sledgehammer, and then you threw in a depth defenseman just for what? Fun? Dude.

I never really understood how we got Hall. It's always an afterthought when commentators talk about the "Rantanen" trade (which should be called the Stankey trade lol). Was a great move!!! Thank you very much.

It's because he wasn't actually traded! He saw the trade happen, saw an opportunity and just social engineered his way onto the Hurricanes roster. He packed his hockey bag in the Blackhawks locker room, took the first flight to RDU, and convinced everyone, even Tulsky, that it was a three team deal. The Blackhawks front office is so incompetent, they still don't realize that he's gone.

Getting rid of Taylor Hall outright helped offset some of the retention Chicago was taking on Rantanen's contract. In fact, if you just look at the money (not the cap hit, which really didn't matter to Chicago), Rantanen's full season actual pay for that season was $6 million and Hall's was $5.25 million. We were about 60% through the season at the time of the trade, so the net actual pay difference for the remaining 40% of the season that Chicago was adding comes out to $300k.

Add it all up, Chicago bought the Canes 2025 3rd round pick for $300k and got rid of Hall who they didn't want and were not really playing in the process.

In truth, Davidson probably wanted Hall out of town because that signing had not gone well for Chicago and he inserted Hall in Chicago’s part of the outgoing in the Rantanen deal just to get him out of town. It also balanced out the money they retained on Rantanen’s deal. That said, he got rid of what turned into a perfectly suitable 2nd or 3rd line winger on a contender for no tangible return aside from a 3rd round pick. Hindsight is 20/20, but that deal would still have happened if Davidson had asked for a mid-level prospect along with the 3rd rounder.

Minor correction. We traded the Blackhawks 2025 3rd round pick for Taylor Hall. The Canes had traded their 2024 3rd rounder to the Blackhawks in exchange for the 2025 3rd rounder.

Technically, Carolina traded Chicago a 3rd round pick for Taylor Hall and Mikko Rantanen because he was on their roster long enough for them to retain salary. But … yeah. Not helpful to look at it that way.

Oh … lost in the noise yesterday, Jason Robertson turned down a significant contract extension offer from Dallas and seems to be looking for Draisaitl’s AAV … $14 million. Fun.
