2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Canes first round failure Julien Gauthier signed with Brynas in Sweden. He ended up playing 181 NHL games, mostly for the Rangers, with 19 goals, 22 assists

Gauthier was one of two first round draft picks we had that year and neither amounted to much— the other being Jake Bean. In fact, that Hurricanes draft class was very sad…it wasn’t a strong class, but our selections really flatlined.

The Canes had a draft party at the arena that year. As Puljujarvi dropped, I was screaming for Francis to trade up to get him. Of course, Francis being Francis he didn’t and I’m glad we didn’t.

But Charlie McAvoy was picked right after Bean. And Tage Thompson was taken 5 picks after Gauthier.

No performance bonuses in Kane’s contract. He has a $1 million salary each year, an $8 million signing bonus this year and $6 million next year. Full No Movement Clause.

Ok, so Chicago has plenty of cap space to fork over $8 million per for Patrick Kane to return. And sure, Patrick Kane is a definite draw in Chicago.

But again, similar to Ovechkin, why is there this need to continue to give these over the hill stars such massive salaries? What the heck happened to vets who are no longer elite contributors taking a bit less to finish out their careers 'where it all started' or 'at the only place I would ever play'? Does that just not happen anymore?

The fact that Patrick Kane got a 2 year contract where all of the money is guaranteed after playing on 2 one year 35+ contracts where only $4 million and $3 million were guaranteed ($2.5 million and $4 million in performance bonuses) is ridiculous.

Greaves got a $3 million salary and $2 million signing bonus in the first year, $5 million salary in years 2 and 3. He got a 5 team NTC in the 3rd year.

I had high hopes for RF that draft. I was hoping he’d flip picks for some established NHL roster ready player or make some other moves in that draft…and nothing. It wasn’t the strongest draft class, but we came away with no viable NHL players that draft.

Kuokkanen might have amounted to something but he was sent to New Jersey for Sami Vatanen. And Hudson Elynuik overplayed his hand, coming off 2 big years with WHL Spokane. He wasn’t re-drafted in 2018 and has never played an NHL game. He was on the ill-fated independent Wolves team in 2023-24. He played for a team in Slovakia last year but finished with ECHL Florida, scoring a career high 13 goals in 38 games. He does have 2 Kelly Cup championships, so he has that going for him. Which is nice.
