2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

I guess it was Scotty Bowman that first expressed the idea of a second line inside the net, and only inside the net, that will serve as a quick reference to see if the puck is fully across the line. If the puck touches that line then it's full across the goal line. Won't cover all goal replays, but it will help in a lot of them.

That was a strange ending to the Edmonton Anaheim game, but that puck was definitely over the line, so they got the call right even though they botched the process.

The referees of course should NOT have called it a 'good goal on the ice' because certainly no referee actually really saw any indication the puck actually was in. That is a problem. But as for 'how can you 100% for sure tell that puck was completely over the line?' argument, you can see 3/5th of the puck very clearly. It's not rocket science to be able to take that very clear view from above he puck, complete the circle around the puck to know where the rest of the puck covered by Jarry's skate must be, and then draw the goal line across.

Sure you cannot FULLY see the puck, or FULLY see the goal line, but it doesn't take 21st century high tech stuff to be able to say that the puck MUST have been fully across the line based on the images of more than half the puck that you can see.
I find that it always seems to start with the zebras on the ice butchering a call that really should not have been butchered! No way the call on the ice should be a goal there, the 💯 right thing to do is say let’s take a closer look on replay because neither of us officials really saw the puck across the line. Just like game 1 in our barn, the zebra reacted to the Tkachuk celebration and calls it a goal on the ice when no way no how he can say that puck was in the net, if that game one incident reverts to the original call on the ice then the entire goal process is broken, Tkachuk celebrated which triggered the ref to make the goal call on the ice despite where he thinks he saw the puck!

One of Scotty’s better ideas when it came to officiating, frankly. It would markedly increase the odds of getting a replay correct, if nothing else.

Thoughts on tonight’s games?

The Pens got the W in Game 4 but didn’t look all that convincing, honestly. Having Silovs in net helped settle things down. His bar is lower than Skinner's, but he’s not nearly as unpredictable and erratic. The oddsmakers seem to like them to win this one at home. I’m not so sure. I’m thinking the Flyers get this one done tonight, which probably means the Pens will blow them out. We’ll see.

I’m pretty sure Vegas didn’t envision finishing up their trip to Utah clinging to their playoff life and down 1-2, but here they are. They’ve got to figure out how to slow the Mammoth down in transition because their D is getting eaten alive by an extinct pachyderm. Seems like the kind of thing Torts normally can handle, but … yeah.

Ken Holland committed malpractice in EDM in never solving their goalie problem and giving Nurse that huge contract with term and a NMC. Bowman has had 2 years as GM and still hasn’t been able to
fix EDM. It almost feels like the EDM front office has tried to follow PITs blueprint, but without the goaltending of Fleury and the necessary supporting cadre of players.

All remaining series to go at least six, please.
I could see that Vegas series going deep if the Knights get their mess together tonight, otherwise … nah. I really don’t think Pittsburgh has enough in the tank for Philly though. Other than Dallas/Minny and Montreal/Tampa, everything else could easily wrap up by Wednesday if nobody gets a series changing effort here pretty soon. Those two feel like they’re going the distance.

Pens come out flying tonight and completely overwhelm a young and inexperienced Flyers team and shakes their confidence severely. 6-1 Pens

Mammoth way too much for Vegas to contain. 5-1 Utah.

Well, Vegas came out flying and then sort of remembered that they’ve had trouble closing out games all season and ended up in OT before they won it. The series is locked at 2-2 but Utah just seems more likely to me.

Speaking of teams running out of gas … the Pens once again worked their tails off to get a 2-0 lead before the legs kind of gave out. They survived on the luckiest of bounces, but the idea of them lasting much longer seems like a stretch.

Tuesday night’s games seem fun. Another heavyweight bout with Dallas and Minnesota, but also two games that could close out a series. Boston’s got to get it done on the road, while Edmonton gets to try to survive at home. I think all three of those are coin flips.
