2025-26 Premier League Thread

Week #2 in the EPL. Man City v Spurs should be fun, and that Monday night fixture at St. James' looks so intriguing with the underlying drama of Alexander Isak.

*softly whispers* Emery out

Not really, but what the actual hell is this??? It clearly didn't work the first week so why not run it back for even worse results. I'm so frustrated with this version of Emery, I want that version we got initially who wasn't scared of losing and made adjustments. He's turned into the guy everyone said he would and I'm the moron for not believing them.

Need to find a way to play without any real wide presence, and frankly that's very much against the grain of the current trends. The build up play is just too slow right now. I hate to say it, but they might be better off playing Watkins out wide more simply because he freaking does something when he gets it on the wing in space.

Football fans are kind of idiots in general. The guy doesn't light it up in his first match with a new team and everyone's just like, "See, I knew he was crap!"
Applies to fans of pretty much all sports, honestly. The major ones, for sure. It's probably possible for a fan base to be super chill when they're supporting their local club in a niche sport ... when they're really just there to support their community and have something to do on a summer evening. Otherwise, it's mostly bonkers most of the time.

What an extraordinary match at St James today. Missed the first 15 minutes but from then on, Newcastle looked more the actual threat. Very intense, physical match. Our one actual chance in the first half? Goal. Then Anthony Gordon got sent off for a foul on Virgil van Dyke (deserved) late in the first half. Then Hugo Ekitike scored early in the second half to make it 2-0 and I'm loving life.
40 minutes later (and two poorly defended set pieces) and I'm shaking my head that is 2-2 again. Two weeks, we've blown a two goal lead both times. But we've got 11 minutes of injury time, and we get the match winner in the 100th minute ... from a 16 year old kid! Phew!

Results from this weekend
Saturday 30 August 2025

Leeds 0-0 Newcastle
Man Utd 3-2 Burnley
Spurs 0-1 AFC Bournemouth
Sunderland 2-1 Brentford
Wolves 2-3 Everton
Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

Sunday 31 August 2025
Aston Villa 0-3 C Palace
Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal
Brighton 2-1 Man City
Nottm Forest 0-3 West Ham

Grealish heavily involved again in Everton's win; Spurs stumble unexpectedly at home; United with a late winner to beat pesky Burnley and Leeds did well to hold Newcastle.

Did not see that West Ham result coming; Brighton comes back (and James Milner becomes the oldest to score on a penalty); Palace thrash Villa with one goal coming from Marc Guehi in perhaps his final appearance.

And my Reds gutted out a tough match vs the Gunners, and scored the only goal on a wonder free kick from Dominik Szoboszlai, channeling his inner Trent Alexander-Arnold with a wonderful free kick from distance.

Hate that it's already the international break, but better to go in feeling good about the latest performance as opposed to stewing about it for two weeks.

As a Villa fan, I'm absolutely thrilled that it's the international break. Get a couple of guys in at the deadline, settle in to a fresh start.

I will say, despite the scoreline, I felt so much better after this last game than the first two. Hell, this isn't even close to our worst recent performance against Palace, so that's a big one. This lineup at least looked capable of creating chances unlike the first two weeks. I truly think if Rogers, Konsa and Cash weren't actively trying to harm the team, we had a real chance in that one. Rogers has been horrifically bad this season and Emery still refuses to ever sub him out. It was so obvious who should have come off for Buendia in the second half, and yet Guessand who looked promising gets taken out and Rogers is still out there. Cash has seemingly forgotten his improvements from last season and is just oops all brain farts and Konsa is a crap defender who had one spectacular season and should have been sold two years ago. He was mediocre last year and has been a pure liability this year, working in tandem with Cash to let in the first two goals and a great solo effort not bothering marking the back post at all to gift the third goal. Everyone else looked solid to good to at least not actively hurting us (Malen).

I was very very happy with that result this weekend. We've taken 7 of the last 9 points from City. Maybe we are their bogey team, or maybe they are finally coming back to earth.

Either way, very happy.

Milner is now the second oldest and second youngest to score in Premier League history. It was his first goal since 2019, and then he did a celebration in honour of Jota. How can one not love Milly.

Both the pose and the gaming tribute were great. I adore Mllly and we'll all raise a toast at the pub when he breaks the record for Prem appearances

Daniel Levy is out at Tottenham Hotspur. The Lewis family, the majority shareholders, informed him on Thursday that he was out as Chairman. He’s being replaced by Peter Charrington, who is stepping into a new role as non-executive chairman. He’s a director at ENIC, which is the Lewis’ vehicle for owning the club.

Yeah, Joe Lewis bought Spurs from Alan Sugar in the early 00s and immediately brought in Levy to run the club so they've always been closely linked. The majority of the shares in the club were placed in a family trust a few years back and it sounds like Lewis' daughter is the main decision maker. I think getting the new stadium built was kind of his last big project and he pretty much faded into the background after that.

My take on Levy is that he was always Joe Lewis' guy, and that he took heat from the fans mostly for simply competently reflecting the owner's wishes for the club. He was cautious because Lewis was cautious. Seems like Lewis' daughter is ready to sail a different line.
