2025 Draft

Well for starters, if he signs his ELC this summer, it's a moot point. He can't go to the NCAA if he's under contract.

What leverage he could have is: Either I'm playing in the NCAA or I'm playing in the NHL, but I'm not going back to the NCAA.

Another positive point, for Misa: He gets to choose his NCAA team instead of being forced to play on one specific team in the OHL due to the draft model.

Misa's already in his third year due to his exceptional status. I think he's done with the OHL.

how will it work if a guy is drafted from CHL and then decides to go play in NCAA, will he get the four year UFA thing?

As it stands, they haven't changed the rules. So drafted in the CHL, they have 2 years to sign the player to an ELC or they lose the rights. I mentioned it when we drafted Tyler Thorpe, for example: He's 19 and turning 20 in a few months, and unfortunately for him, his only option next season is go pro or play an overage season when he's going to turn 21. The best option for him would be the NCAA route in a good program to play games at a good level.

I hope they change the rules for the CHL players headed to the NCAA.

I'm not sure, actually. In the previous rules, a player like John Carlson (drafted out of the USHL, played his 19 & 20 year old seasons in London) gave up his NCAA eligibility to play in the CHL, so there was only two years to sign him.

The rules usually apply based on where the player was taken. Might be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think with all this CHL/NCAA happening and the bull that McGroarty and Gauthier pulled, they’re going to need to change some rules so guys don’t just go NCAA just to become a free agent or pick and choose. Would ruin the whole draft process

Do you know what actually happened, or are you mad at them for reasons unknown? What "bull" did they pull, exactly? Do you have that same view of players who are pending UFAs and tell the team they're on that they won't re-sign there, no matter what?

McGroarty & Gauthier weren't free agents. They both had two more years of college eligibility before becoming free agents and choosing where they could sign.

They both told the teams that drafted them, and from what I can tell it's for the exact same reasons, that they wouldn't sign there. I feel bad for the fans of the teams that drafted them, but they had every right to say no to them. But the teams could have called their bluff and told them, cool, enjoy your two extra years of NCAA hockey instead of an NHL salary.

Unfortunately, it won't have any impact one way or another on the draft.

Not related to this year's draft, but there's a 15 year old player called Jonah Neuenschwander who played pro hockey today in Switzerland's major league. Only a handful of players have ever played at the age in that league.

He's 6'3" at 15 years old and almost a PPG player in the U20 league.

Someone that might be worth keeping an eye on in the Landon Dupont draft.
He'll be playing on Switzerland's U20 team in this year's WJC.

I'm on the Caleb Desnoyer train myself.
I like him as well but I really think we'll play ourselves out of the top six. I don't expect him to be there. Depending on the second half of the Season, McQueen is a beast. Huge. If he can get back his offense they'll take a hard look. I'd prefer Hagens, Misa or Desnoyer though.

Shaefer is my number one. He's got #1D written all over him.

Our schedule is getting a lot harder and we don’t have a backup goalie, etc. We’ll be bottom five soon enough.

Carter Bear would be the Habs pick with their second first if it was up to Simon Boisvert.
