2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

So … chances that John Carlson will still be a Hurricane tomorrow?

A huge part of me just can’t see the Canes going to $10 million for a defenseman that far along his age curve. Color me skeptical, but then again I was hugely surprised they traded for his rights in the first place. So … time will tell

I suck at figuring this stuff out.....but what happens if they do not sign him? Did they give away assets (i know its only Masters and a 6th, but still assets) for absolutely nothing? Do they get compensatory picks?

Yeah, if Carlson ends up signing somewhere else tomorrow then they will have pitched that 6th rounder into the sea. I don’t count Masters because it’s not like he’s anything more than an AHL depth piece. There’s no compensation for losing a player to free agency.

And given what else is out there (nothing much), you’d expect that Carslon will get his number from somebody tomorrow.

Yeah, I just cannot see throwing $10 million x 2 at a guy like an ageing John Carlson...for some teams yes, for the Canes that seems pretty steep when you already have a deep D core.

Friedman is now on NHL on XM and says Carolina has a bunch of balls in the air and being aggressive...other teams are allowed to talk to RFA's today so that plays a part in things around the league.

I'd narrow that a bit. He has made it clear he wants to return to the East coast.
Yeah. By all reports he liked his time with the Ducks but really doesn’t want to play a Western Conference schedule. Fair enough. He’s old and flying that much sucks

I'm taking this as 'Canes are doing our normal process and are checking in on everything'. Long gone are the years where the funds and front office were limiting. Pretty much anything goes now as far as the Canes making any trade or free agent signing. Definitely much more exciting to be a Canes fan now.

Now the only “funds limit” is the Cap, not the owner’s bank balance.

FWIW, the Ducks didn’t qualify Masters.
No shock there … unless they had a real need with their ECHL affiliate. Even after Carolina ended up with him, they didn’t even bother to assign Masters to Greensboro. He played for some other ECHL team on loan.

Just saw an interview on TSN with Chris Johnston and he believes Carlson and the Canes are close on making a deal.
I just do not know how you make Carlson your highest paid dman at $10 million a season when he probably slots in as your third best dman with the current roster as it stands now. The guy is slowing down and is not what he used to be even when you consider a rising cap and a thin UFA crop...maybe the price on him came down from $10...

Didn’t we sign Orlov as our highest paid D and was probably 4th on the chart at that time behind Slavin, Skjei and Pesce?

They did. And only regretted it in so much as Orlov never really made any effort to actually play the system. He was a mistake, but not because of his contract. These guys aren’t children. They know that sometimes another player might make more than them for any number of reasons.

I just hope the $10 million number is more rumor mill media chatter than the actual AAV when it gets done.

At his age, Carlson may be more interested in finally hoisting a Cup than landing another big payday. Never underestimate the need for a legacy of a professional player. (I understand that a legacy could be looking for paydays or for rings. If his need for a legacy is the latter, then I can see a deal being worked out for him.)
