2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

Some of us bumpkins had 4H and Royal Ambassadors camps. Also did one Indian Guides summer camp long before they changed the name of that one too. That was the YMCA version of scouts.

5 bonus points if you know what RAs were.

10 points if you WERE an RA (and/or a camp lifeguard) :)

Honestly, our southern Baptist Church had the RA program. And we met every Wednesday night. We showed up and played football on the well lit front lawn of the church until they made us come inside for class. I don't have a clue what the purpose was beyond their plan to create missionaries. But it was football hour for us. With a very short Sunday school type class session. We went to some camp but I could tell you where it was. The Y Guides camp was somewhere in Brunswick County. And we went to near Hanging Rock. As teens we went to some religious camp outside of Asheville, you can see it from I40 with a large cross on the hill. It's changed names and owners over the years

I got stuck working at New Life Camp for several summers, getting paid peanuts to lifeguard a bunch of church kids who would rather have been swimming anywhere other than that slimy North Raleigh lake. Their lifeguards would inevitably quit in the middle of the season for better jobs, because almost every lifeguard job was better*, and the camp director was a family friend so off I’d go to fill in … under duress. They have WAY better facilities now. Back in the 70s it was pretty rustic.

*there WAS a worse job, and that was getting press ganged into lifeguard duty while you were a camper at Boy Scout camp. Camp Durant routinely just grabbed those of us with our certifications and made us lifeguard during our camp weeks … for free. Duty, Honor, Country, slave labor. Brought to you by the Occoneechee Council
