I got stuck working at New Life Camp for several summers, getting paid peanuts to lifeguard a bunch of church kids who would rather have been swimming anywhere other than that slimy North Raleigh lake. Their lifeguards would inevitably quit in the middle of the season for better jobs, because almost every lifeguard job was better*, and the camp director was a family friend so off I’d go to fill in … under duress. They have WAY better facilities now. Back in the 70s it was pretty rustic.
*there WAS a worse job, and that was getting press ganged into lifeguard duty while you were a camper at Boy Scout camp. Camp Durant routinely just grabbed those of us with our certifications and made us lifeguard during our camp weeks … for free. Duty, Honor, Country, slave labor.
