2026 Hurricanes Off Season Thread

I'm thinking it's just hopeful Winnipeg fans floating this, but I heard people rumbling about Seth Jarvis being a trade piece for Hellebuyck, likely just because he is from Winnipeg.

Certainly, the Canes are not trading Jarvis for Hellebuyck. The only way Seth Jarvis gets traded anywhere would be for an absolutely elite forward. And even then, the fact that Jarvis pretty much plays both our '1st line top scoring winger' and 'elite defensive forward' roles for a cap hit that is way below his market value would make him a pretty difficult player to justify trading anywhere (unless for some reason he decides he doesn't want to play here anymore).

Anyhow, watching some of our fanbase have meltdowns about making ANY trade is entertaining.
 
Yeah, same as I said a couple of years ago … Jarvis is going nowhere. He’s an absolute core piece with Carolina and I’m not sure they even move him in a deal for an elite forward. That would just be Winnipeg fans grasping onto a straw that they think might stick around.

FWIW, I’m seeing reports that Nikishin wants something around $8 million AAV for a log term contract and something around $6 million for a bridge. That’s not an insane range, but it’s a stretch given his development curve and his age ceiling. If those asks are real, then there’s zero mystery as to why Carolina has been lightly shopping him. You HAVE to figure out all the options before you make that kind of commitment

I want 8 mill a year too
 
A. It’s an ask, not a demand … per reports

B. It’s a negotiation so the Canes will likely start somewhere lower and they’d meet in the middle

C. Nikishin is arbitration eligible, but is still an RFA so he’s got some leverage but not that much presuming he wants to play in the NHL.

There’s no reason for the Canes (or fans) to get bent out of shape for Nikishin asking to make Miller’s money (more or less) on a long term deal or $5-6 mil on a short term deal. That’s a perfectly reasonable place to start negotiations and pretty much in line with what I would have expected from his camp. Signing him was always going to be tricky, and probably always will be going forward. I doubt anybody in the Canes office would have been surprised by that ask.
 
Dundon still making friends in Portland. My Portland based daughter said he’s probably the most hated man in the city right now.

Dundon expects taxpayers to foot entire bill for potential Moda Center renovation

New Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon on Wednesday showed no interest in putting money toward the Moda Center’s expected $600M makeover, saying that simply keeping the NBA franchise in Portland was enough of a financial sacrifice.

Portland is one of the least likely of any community in this nation to approve a public funded stadium. Does he know *anything* about Portland? He should at least watch Portlandia to get an idea.
 
I suspect Dundon’s playbook in Portland will be what he’s going to use in Raleigh. He’s put it out there on Spittin’ Chicklets that Raleigh will need a new arena sooner rather than later. The Centennial Authority has already replied to his comments and sounded like a new arena was an eventuality. Not thrilled to ever have taxpayers foot the bill for these things and hope the CA can come up with a plan that doesn’t force us to pay it.
 
I mean, I’m having a hard time caring about Dundon’s Portland adventure. The level of screwing up you need to do to actually lose money owning an NBA franchise is WAY beyond him so it’s all just noise from there. Worst comes to worst, he hates it, decides to bug out and sells the team for a minor profit.

As for Raleigh, a new arena is an inevitability at some point. Is that sooner or later or somewhere in between? No clue. And tax money already supports operations and upgrades through the hospitality tax. That’s public funding even if they managed to raise it on the backs of people who mostly don’t live here. It’s a different calculus when you have just the one major pro team in town, but I think you can go ahead and count on public money being committed when a new building eventually gets built.

We’ll probably have the meals and entertainment tax in perpetuity.

Portland paid Paul Allen’s estate $7 million for the arena in 2024. It would have been short sighted for them to acquire a 29 year old arena and assume that a) upgrades weren‘t necessary and b) if they were, they wouldn’t be on the hook for most of them. When the Portland Timbers expanded Providence Park, the owner got a 10 year ticket sale tax exemption to finance it. There are plenty of creative ways a billionaire and city can finance arena upgrades.

Um...they've done it in the past. When Moda was originally built in the 90s, the city contributed land and infrastructure, plus about $35 million toward construction for what was otherwise a privately-funded build. The city has also repeatedly financed renovations to Providence Park, the home of the MLS Timbers and the NWSL Thorns.
