And the Captain's are.....?

This is really dumb. If no one person clearly stands out as "the guy", it would have been better just to have three A's. Sometimes (most of the time) I just don't get it with this bunch. Oh well, small potatoes really. Just win for a change and nobody will care.

Meh...Really not a decision at all-- Rask is out and status quo maintained. I hope that thinking doesn't extend to all aspects of the on ice product. Overall, it really doesn't matter what I think, it's more important as to what the locker room thinks.

The three chosen players were all names that I thought were in the mix, but having Staal as the captain at home and Faulk as the captain on the road seems stupid to me. A captain should be the captain wherever he may be.

Splitting the captaincy is weak, IMO, and shows the lack of willingness to stand up and make a statement with the roster that has been a hallmark of the current combination of GM and coach.

And no, I don’t think Willie should have been a captain. Again, the guy hasn’t earned anything with this version of this club. I understand that some people got salty when I said that back in the summer, but nobody changed my mind on the issue.

Really, it's the second year in a row that they punted on leadership. No captain last year just 4 alternates, Skinner and Rask split an A like the C is split this year.

That's like saying Ron Francis had to re-earn his way to the captaincy when he re-upped with the Canes.

My feeling is that Williams has earned the respect of the room from his 1.0 tour with the Canes and the past several years of clutch playoff play. I don't think there's really any comparison to William's leadership by example cred compared to anyone else on this team. And that goes for the former captain as well, IMO.

Yeah but in context with the current core, JW has no connection - and that must be respected - or he risks losing them and messing up the team mojo. If he earns it and the team asks him to do it... then we'll be there. Otherwise, he has all the qualities of leadership and it won't stop him from being one with the club, among its leaders, even if he has no letter. IMO

I do think it is kind of lame to split and as has been said, you'd think one player would want that responsibility, moving forward as things are. So maybe then this really was a player made decision?

Re: JFG

You'll never get me on the board with that line of thinking. You don't bring in a relative stranger and tell the room he's your new captain.

It's this romantic fascination with old players that makes me utterly despise recycling.

Interesting comments from Patrick O'Sullivan regarding the Hurricanes and their captain decisions. He said that he trusts whatever decisions RF makes about this team. Thinks RF was a great played when he was in the league and likes how he is rebuilding the Canes now-- anticipates they'll be a strong year in, year out contender in the next couple of years-- really on the brink. He further said that in all of his years in the league and the time he has played for different teams, that he learned so much from RF in his brief time with Carolina-- that he really understand the game, has his pulse on the team and what's needed.

Dual Captains is the first, and only decision that GMRF has made that I disagree with. And if hard pressed, I'd have to say it's a gutless choice. It really puts a damper on my expectations. This team clearly has no leader and that's going to be a problem when we have troubles.

I don't think we will make the playoffs this year. We don't have all the parts yet.

Really, co-captains dooms the team another season because of failed leadership?

The sky looks steadily in place here in North Raleigh.

Personally, it isn't ideal - you want one of the leaders to take the reigns of leadership all to himself. But I am not so sour on the decision. Its not like either C are chop suey. They are a part of the core. Its not having two captains if you think about it - it is having two captains alternate the role between C and A when at home and on road (or if context dictates, i.e. Jordan will get the C for games in Ontario... per the presser, his home province, whereas Faulk will get the same in his home state. This is kinda of peculiar but whatever)

I really don't think it is a big deal and don't see this as undermining in any way what the club has achieved till now.

Let the season start already (ours)

This!!! Especially the last part...just win baby, I don't really care if they want to get really unique and name George Alves the captain on games vs Vegas on Tuesdays...the focus really needs to be on winning, shedding the bad starts that plague this team, turning around the piss poor goaltending of the past, winning in shoot-outs...and on and on and on.

He did. Francis took the C after one year wearing an A under the unfortunate captaincy of Keith Primeau. Rare indeed is the player who gets handed a C in his first year with a new club, return engagement or not. Willie is a good player and a good guy. I have no problems with him at all. I just don’t think ANYBODY should be a captain on a team filled with guys who have never played with him before.

Did anyone actually suggest otherwise? No. No one did.

Did I misread something?

I hate this move....it is just plain stupid. Unfortunately, it means Francis isn't comfortable with anyone in the locker room to step up and be that guy. I think this is more about the overall lack of "the guy" in the locker room versus Francis making a dumb decision. I think he was forced into this as going another year with no C and 3 A's sends an even worse message.

I am holding onto my Tavares dream as long as possible to fix these problems. He turns this roster into a top half playoff team in the East.....hopefully he can see that and the new ownership is ready to open the checkbook this off-season.

I think the verdict on this board is in: co-captaincy is a dumb idea. But it ain't anything that winning won't cure. I'll be there bright and early tomorrow. Go Canes!
