I think that's why they have a mandate to blow the whistle quickly. The goalies are so vulnerable... they're just sitting ducks and that extra second leads to guys crashing the net or whacking at hands trying to free up pucks. Goalies would be getting hurt and there would be a hell of a lot more fighting.

disagree...they still crash the net. It's not like they have the ability to go in freeze frame mode at the sound of a whistle. Plenty of times they don't even hear the whistle, depending on building noise.

An extra second would increase the net front chaos tremendously. Like you said, it's not like the can go in freeze frame mode as soon as they hear the whistle... now make that whistle a second later when the goalie has the puck covered with games rushing him... disaster.
