Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Not sure if the timing lines up, but might've saved us from giving up the 1st to dump Marleau if we had.

And then Willy wouldn't be making any more than he is now I'm sure, and signed for an extra two years.

More importantly, Matty and Marner wouldn't have gotten what they did in this climate.

I'd guess $10M for Matty and $9M for Marner.

Other teams could take to him and he realized:
1. I dont have to play for torts
2. I dont have to live in Columbus

Yeah he wants out

The funny thing is there are moronic Leaf fans claiming that's a great contract LOL. 2 years is not good at all for a guy you view as a big part of your future and a franchise piece and reportedly wants out over the contract.

I'd be curious to get a peek behind the scenes in Columbus. Because on the one hand, Kekalainen seems to be pretty shit at contract negotiations. Between Dubois and Ryan Johansen, he's soured the team's relationship with two young top centers. He couldn't re-sign Duchene or Panarin. He only got Werenski signed to a three year bridge deal that, if Werenski files for salary arbitration once it's over, will walk him straight to UFA.

On the other hand, how much of it is that Columbus is a perpetually mediocre team in an undesirable market, and players in general just don't have any interest in locking themselves into that situation long-term?

Now they have PLD an RFA in 2 years and Seth Jones is UFA same year.

Imagine if guys like Ovechkin, Crosby, Pastrnak, Bergeron, Point, etc. all took "market value". Their teams would be a lot less competitive and a lot less likely to be perennial cup contenders.

But priorities are priorities I guess.
