Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

back to back. unreal.

If we needed more proof that the awards voters don't have the faintest clue, there it is.

The Isles weren't exactly great in either season:

20/21: 13th best record in the league
19/20: 9th best record in the east....only made the covid welfare playoffs and then went on a run. Had the 14th best record in the league.

So Lou built a thoroughly mediocre bubble team, and the hockey media jerked him off for it twice.

remember that award is voted on by GMs.

and GMs have plenty of motivation to make a loud claim in the old skool / new skool Lou/Dubas scenario.

(and maybe even playoffs refs do too)

Its funny, because the way people talk about Lou's moves are the way they should really be talking about the Muzzin, Bunting, Kampf, Brodie Dubas moves.

JFC, it's even worse than I though

In 2 years, they will have 37.25 million spent on:

Anders Lee (33)
Brock Nelson (32)
Palmieri (33)
Pageau (31)
Bailey (34)
Beauvillier (26)
Matt fucking Martin (34)
Ross Johnston (30)
Czikas (33)

But somehow manage to not have Barzal signed to play that season. Barzal is going to want 9-10 million by then (I think his QO is 10 million). They're going to end up spending 50 million on a terrible group of forwards. Amazing. The hockey media gave Lou awards for putting this together.
Maybe GM of the Year is like the Razzies.

I get why you don’t want to give it to a 30 year old inernational superstar, but a guy like Bunting deserves the recognition way more than some 19 year old kid with a ton of talent.

except he is a Leaf so he obviously does not deserve to win, and if he does it is only because the rules are problematic

Bunting is not too old but he ain’t gonna win

They'll give it to Seider because he's a rookie within screaming distance of Bunting for the scoring lead. Bunting should finish no lower than 2nd though, fuck this age based nonsense. There are already rules in place specifically for that. It's rookie of the year, not 20 yr old of the year.

How far out front in points would need to be to win, do you guys think?

Over the forwards? I think he's safe now. Over Seider, I think he needs to go on a heater, coupled with Seider struggling down the stretch. So Bunting hitting the high 60's in points with 30 goals and Seider finishing with 5 points or so. Neither of which would shock me. Seider looks like he's finishing up a heater (12 points in his last 10 games) and he's already played more games this season than he's ever seen. Career max was 49. A lot of kids struggle in the back 1/4 of their first full NHL season or two.

TBH, I’d say Bunting deserves it more than fellow recent old Calder trophy winners Kaprizov & Panarin.

Their late NHL starts were entirely a matter of personal choice on their parts, and they were already superstars in one of the better hockey leagues in the world before coming over.

Bunting on the other hand is a pure late bloomer. And it’s not like he had any choice in not hitting any of the games played requirements to lose his rookie status prior to this season.
