Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

I doubt many would think the Habs had a great draft. After reading a bunch about him and watching a bunch of videos, I really like Gleb, but any time your 1st round pick has "middle 6 upside" you didn't kill it. I also like our 2nd round pick, Runtso... but he was passed over in last year's draft, and while he had a late birthday and is still just 18, that's a tough situation to be overly excited about. Then we took a bunch of big guys that don't seem to have much talent.

On the bright side, even though we seemed to go for size and truculence with every pick, by all accounts they are all good/great skaters so hopefully someone hits.

I'd be surprised to see anyone give us better than a C+.

these are the same idgits that don’t get drafts right, don’t have NHL jobs and throw shit at the wall but sure. Whatever. Weak draft after top 10. Most will “lose”.

Winning the pundit draft sure is fun but does it translate to wins 3-5 years later? Some teams keep 'winning drafts' year after year in June but accomplish very little else.

I'm happy to give Team Hughes the benefit of the doubt here. They've made some amazing picks since they started.

In retrospect, you guys should have traded your top picks for some big strapping young power forward at the deadline. But maybe just start the highway robbery a couple minutes earlier next time.

Yeah Gleb feels like a "it's really shitty that we couldn't steal Knies, let's try to pick him with our 1st"

Rightly so with Hutson, Caufield, Suzuki, and all the other small guys. You just shouldn’t address it through the draft.

One Habs friend here has been harping on how he doesn’t buy that their size and toughness are enough to get by in the playoffs and that this year was a mirage to even get that far. Hard not to agree. While it’s old school stuff to focus on size and toughness, it’s still usually necessary, just not at the expense of skill. Carolina might be more of an exception in a weird playoffs year.

If we are not getting top end talent I would hope we flex our cap space to leverage players into shorter deals.

Instead of $5 x3 go $6.5 x 2

Based on Chaykas comments yesterday, I could see Jenner. I could see Bob/Andersson. . I could see a long term signing if there is value, like maybe. Shea/nerd type. But other than that they’ll look for short term/bargain bin deals

I’m interested to see who the nerds identify.

Yeah, there’s definitely an opportunity to go big on some short-term deals. That’s part of why I like the idea of signing Patrick Kane.

He is the top FA on my wishlist.

He is the only guy who can shelter McKenna if he isnt ready for 1st line duty with Matthew's.

Kane 1st line to start the season and McKenna on the 2nd or 3rd.

Patrick Kane is a meh 5v5 player in the year of our Lord 2026.

He should be on a sheltered 3rd line, not a 1st line. He's a PP monster though still, yeah. But bring him in and your blocked Gavin's path to 1st unit PP minutes

Can’t get real knies, might as well get ugly worse knies.

Or given him a pardner on the second unit.

Marchment is going to get PAID, with term too, and I don’t want to be the team giving it to him.
There are under 40 current nhlers 35+

We have raddish OEL Rielly tanev McCabe Tavares Willy all signed to deals that will take them past that.

You can’t add a 3rd liner to that list.
