Benson was way ahead of Cowan in the pre-draft years, but Cowan immediately put up a better season in his post draft year than Benson had in any year in junior before that. Benson went straight to the NHL and that was probably a mistake by Buffalo, but after a couple very middling years he seems to be blossoming finally in his 3rd year.
Cowan showed flashes this year but even though he's the same age as Benson he was still a rookie, and the team had a tough year all around.
I'm pretty hopeful that Cowan can catch up to Benson pretty quickly again in the NHL.

I loved Cowan as a regular after the deadline. Looks like star-lite potential there.
