Detroit shouldn't be concerned about 2026-27 roster holes. They should be concerned with getting as much for everything over the age of 29 that they can and retooling heavy around Seider, Raymond, Debrincat, Edvinsson, etc. They need to add to their long term core, and take risks if necessary to do so.

Yup, same as Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton in a year.

Or just do away with them altogether the way they exist now. MLB doesn't have them unless you qualify as a 10 & 5 (10 years in the league, 5 with the team you're currently with). NBA is similar but their thresholds are 8 & 4, and can only be given on a UFA contract not on an extension.

The NHL's system is pretty unique and starting to show some serious issues with it.
 
Gotta wonder what McDavid thinks of the Florida business. He probably will think he has no choice but to pick another contender at a deep discount for any chance at a cup

Yeah, that's my preference. But at least let's do something like baseball (which I wasn't aware of.) Even 8 and 3.

Yeah, it should be something for a guy who has stuck around a city for 8-10 years who has put down roots there to not be uprooted without being consulted. Not a tool for every 22-23 yr old in the league to get automatically so that they can force their way to the team they want to play for when they haven't won a cup yet by 25-26.
