Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Removing politics from the equation.

Most players dont like playing in cities where there is an exuberant amount of attention.

Like imagine having to play in Winnipeg and still answer more questions than players in Dallas.

This actually brings up an important point that Canadian NHL teams should start to address. The old media model is dead, so why are they still letting a gang of reporters hound these guys asking goofy questions when the actual interaction with fans (which was the point of dealing with the media in pre social media days) is so easily done without forcing Auston Matthews to justify his life to Steve Simmons.

They should be pushing back to the league to have media availability policies amended. Having the coach eat a mile of shit is fine, but the players should be insulated from it all here.

Like our move for Raddysh, I can't see the return being significant.

Buffalo was already an over achiever and they're taking a pretty solid step back this year.

One thing ive always liked about John Tortarella is he does his best to protect his players from this bullshit and takes all of it himself.

Like imagine McDrai having to deal with Jim Matheson everyday, it has to drain on you and beg for the sunshine and peace of LA

The model for success in Toronto is still the Pat Quinn. Be completely adversarial with them, call them out for writing dumb shit and foster an "us against the world" mentality with your team. Make as much of the spilt ink about you instead of the team.

In the early Shanaplan days they made sounds with their mouths about making Toronto a safe place for players and I thought that meant they were going to go in that direction, and then Babcock decided that his ego demanded throwing everyone on the team under the bus instead and that just became the organizational go to.

Like beyond themselves, who does the media and their stupid or softball barrage of questions even serve? Fans have access in so many other ways and there is no way the players want any part of this and as much as this is a CAN/US thing, this is even bigger. Hockey players for the most part are introverts, they hate this shit and for 95% of them winning is winning regardless of where it is, it being in a Canadian city isnt special. Even most Ontario guys want to avoid this

All the more reason i think when McDavid leaves the shitshow that is the Oilers he probably goes full Thanos and to solitary wher he can best be dominant and left the fuck alone

Tuch is good, and will be good for some time to come, so it's just the nature of these UFA deals for players who are around 30. They're just getting the max term and you have to just accept it if you want the player, and know that the last few years might be a problem.

But also likely that that problem is the next GM's problem. You'll get the benefit of the first few to several years, and then you're likely gone and some other sap is cleaning up the mess of whatever anchor contracts remain.
