Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

I felt sorry for teams with cap crunches during the Covid era, but now I have zero pity for these own goals.

This sort of thing is why you need to not blow your whole wad on July 1.

There's going to be more of these kinds of things over the next month or two leading into camp.

Had to lock up Sissons though. Market was going wild for him.

So, if Carlsson is worth $18M to Anaheim, then Gauthier has the same value give or take because center vs. winger.

Does he take a reasonable $10m or so contract now, or is he holding out for $15M or whatever other crazy number?

If they have to spend through the nose to keep him, they're in trouble. Killorn would be the obvious dump to create space, and Kreider would be probably next. Would've taken Killorn and his one year instead of Sissons, especially if they retained a little, and sent over a pick. Kreider I would take right now if they're not asking much in return.

Verbeek has nickled and dimed at every turn — that’s his only move. Previously, it resulted in camp holdouts, now it’s offer sheets because other teams have the means
I love guys like this being forced to eat shit. Don't want to properly value your own players, then let someone else do it for you and deal with these sophie's choice dillemas.

Carlsson @ 18 million clogs up your cap a bit. Kinda shows he’s indifferent about being in Anaheim vs Philly/highest bidder. Can’t blame a guy for prioritizing being paid. So do you Lose him for 4 middle of the round 1st rounders? Lessons to be learned here that you really need to pay the guys before they get to this point. With some front offices starting to smarten up maybe we see more of these.

True but also sometimes the player won't play ball. They may want to walk to RFA status, but in those cases, at least you know and you have to trade them off before they get there. No oh we'll negotiate all season long and see where things go. Nuh uh. Either extend before the season starts or we're looking to trade you off, so decide if you want to be here.

Willy is a steal now, but Knies is the steal of the century at that price and for so many years still. It's no wonder every team is dying for him, and why we shouldn't deal him off.

If they really are trying to trade Rielly, and he really is wanting to leave or open to leaving, then this situation looks like one where the Ducks might make sense. Add Joshua to the deal, take Kreider back, something around that maybe.

Still don't think we should trade him though.

It's nice to have players at good prices. But you need a lot of elite talent to actually win anything. And if you can leverage the trade value from a guy like Knies (which comes from being young, being a scarce power forward, and being locked in at a good aav) and acquire another elite piece, it may be worth it. May be. Extremely hard to find a partner and unlikely to happen, but smart to explore it.

Knies is an elite(ish) piece. He hasn't even had a chance to grow into what he will fully become yet. This is the tip of the iceberg, and though he had more points last year, I honestly consider it a down year for him due to injuries, Biff, and terrible team.
