It’s all about getting into a Division I college, unfortunately the reality these parents cant wrap their heads around is 95% of these kids will end up playing high school hockey, then beer league…

I have friends and neighbours who invested heavily in hockey. It was their life. Results are mixed… some D3, some went no where and now play beer league, maybe another one will do something? I dunno.
The time and money spent on this was massive… ya gotta love it, I guess.

He IS what he hates.
We spent a lot on my son’s hockey but he will probably end up playing D-1 tennis . . . but he’s definitely a better tennis player from having played hockey too (much bigger “toolbox” as they say). Also, tennis only kids tend to be very weird. Very.

I find kids/adults that just played /or involved in just Individual sports such as Tennis have a different mindset...it is good that your son played a team sport.. builds a different mindset for the better.. imo

Scholarships are great but many basically prepay before the "free" educ
And the only men’s sports getting full free rides are football, basketball, LAX, some baseball and some hockey. You’re not getting that much, if anything, if you’re a male athlete in one of the so-called “Olympic sports” unless you’re a foreign athlete and are a star in that sport.
One of my law partners' sons plays Div 1 Lacrosse. He had to send him mega $$ as not all was covered.

Question: I can only think of Guy Hebert & Dustin Penner as Div 3 players ever becoming NHL regulars, anyone of more significance?

So, I agree with this. I guess it’s my own bias at being a (very shitty) team sports guy.
But, a little nuance. One of my kiddos is pretty decent athlete. Does competitive stuff. Team sport experience was horrible, toxic and ultimately alienating. Individual sport experience has been quite good… kiddos are supportive of one another. I guess it’s a combination of club environments and how a kid reacts to challenges. For the individual sport, the organization is quite successful - multiple olympians and world championship competitors, so they can be ruthless. But, nevertheless, they have a knack for raising all boats it seems.

Yeah, my athletic kiddo might be on the scholarship margins of one of those olympic sports, so we’re trying to manage expectations. It doesn’t help that some older friends did go to the States and there is peer influence for sure. And it doesn’t help that their parents are loaded… (or indebted.)
At the end of the day, it doesn’t make much sense.
I agree with the “not making much sense” part even though I participate in it.

I suspect it makes even less sense for us because out of state tuition, even for public unis, are crushingly high and we (partially) “pre-pay” through higher taxes for CDN schools. Add exchange rate risk…
You are a good dad. I would have paid the 25000 a year for a hockey academy but Mrs Count was opposed. It was a 1-1 tie so I lost ( just like with with the Escalade)
