define irony

Irony is when there's a gap between what's expected and what actually happens, or between what's said and what's meant. There are a few main types:
Verbal irony — saying the opposite of what you mean, often for sarcastic effect. ("Oh great, another Monday.")
Situational irony — when the outcome is the opposite of what would be expected. (A fire station burning down, a police station getting robbed.)
Dramatic irony — when the audience knows something a character doesn't, creating tension or dark humor. (The viewer knows the killer is in the house; the character doesn't.)
The word is also famously misused to describe mere coincidence ("It's ironic that we both wore the same shirt"), which is technically just a coincidence, not irony — though this usage has become so common that some dictionaries now acknowledge it informally.
