Canes get new CFO

Although it's a standard practice to be escourted from the building, that is one of the most humiliating things a long-time employee will endure.

It happened to me in 1993. Of course, the fact that I resigned and informed my employer that I had accepted a position with the direct competitor had a lot to do with it!

Yeah. Companies get a bad rap for escorting out employees who are leaving the job, but there's often really good reason to do so. Like making sure they don't take company property with them when they go ... either intellectual, sales related or physical. Most times it's a cordial formality ... sometimes not so much.

May be good reasons, but the trail of collateral damage from Karmanos "spending more time with the team" continues.

JR "retires" and makes a lateral move to the Penguins, taking banished son Jason with him.

Now longtime financial honcho abruptly departs in a somewhat less than cordial "mutual decision" announcement and escorted from the building. And, although that might be business as usual in large corporations, in the mom-and-pop environment that is Gale Force, that's a noteworthy event.

I'd like a new owner, please. This one concerns me.

If you quit your job voluntarily you have plenty of time before giving notice to take home whatever you want. So the frog march makes no sense then.

The main local guy who could easily buy the team has more private life baggage than a 747. Not Jim Goodmon, the other guy whose name starts with Good.

Not gonna happen ... and I suspect you know the reasons why. Starting with the fact that the guy doesn't give a crap about sports in general and ending with something I'm not getting into on a message board.

Well John Edwards is rich and a local guy and a sports fan. (at least a fan of UNC) And he only cheated on his wife once , as far as we know. :)

We've been all through the usual local rich guy suspects and nobody anyone ever mentions is going to come through.

And I personally have no problem with this particular change. Like I said, I know some people who think Amendola was just a bag man, and frankly your CFO needs to be more than that.

Can we all agree that this team is losing quite a bit of money every year and PK certainly does not have the financial clout he use to have when he was the head of Compuware? Having said that, how much longer can Karmanos continue to lose mass amounts of money before he starts to panic? Without any deep-pocketed, local ownership in the area with a vested interest to buy this team, how long before the Canes become the prime prospect for the move to Quebec City for their new rink? The Arizona Coyotes mess is the only thing that keeps the Canes from leading the "first to move" headlines in the NHL it seems.

I keep reminding people that new ownership from somewhere other than NC absolutely does NOT mean the team would be a candidate to relocate.

Not sure why that doesn't seem to want to sink in. A lot of NHL teams are owner by people from somewhere other than the host city, and Karmanos wasn't a local when he moved the club here. The arena is still a good one and the Canes have one of the better lease deals in professional sports. There's really no driving factor to move the team. Period.

So my advice is to quite worrying about that and focus on worrying about if and when this team starts to show better results on the ice.

Bingo. He not only has a good lease deal, one of his companies operates the arena. Is any prospective new owner going to operate whichever arena he thinks he's going to move the team to? Not unless he builds said arena. So figure another $400-500 million on top of the purchase price of the team. Then the NHL has to get their vig to allow the franchise to move. Pretty soon, you're close to 10 figures and nobody this side of Steve Ballmer is going to sink a that much money into a hockey team.
