Canes Increase Scouting Staff

It says that Whitney will be joining the Hurricanes professional scouting staff on a part-time basis. I suspect he's going to be sitting in Glendale watching a lot of games...

Which would be fine. Eyes that you trust in the building watching games and practices is exactly what you want from a scout. Doesn't matter where they do their thing ... so long as it gets done. And Phoenix is an easy connection to the Cali teams, so if some team that has a player you want to scout is on the west coast swing, you've got your man right there.

Do scouts also watch tapes of games? I assume they do.

Nothing wrong with in person scouting, but with tape you can rewind and watch as many times as you want. And they normally can watch from various camera angles as well.

Both, typically. I read an interview with one of the Wings Euro scouts and he liked to watch the tape on a kid first so he would know what tendencies he was looking for in live action. I assume some guys probably prefer the opposite as well. Thing is ... I'm a big believer in experienced eyes in the building during live action. You can watch as much tape as you want without really getting a sense of the impact a player has on his shifts. And that's something the Canes have been sorely missing with their paltry cheapo miniature scouting staff ... especially when it comes to pro scouting. It's patently obvious that Rutherford routinely traded for guys he wasn't really that familiar with, or had only known years and years before. And that's of course a big reason why we ran the stupid recycling program for so many years. Because, hey ... you know the guys who actually wore your uniform, for good and bad.
