Ex-Canes Thread?

I don't care if Rask suddenly starts going in the same way Lindholm or Skinner has-- he was NOT producing here, was not going to produce here and looked lost. That is one player who needed a change of scenery badly and if it works for him, good for Victor!

I’m with Jeffbear on Rask. I didn’t think he ever mentally recovered from his shoulder injury. He got too passive and not nearly aggressive enough. If he recovers in Minnesota, good for him. We still won the trade.

I saw more than one hockey writer reference scouts noting Rask's lack of speed as a real issue when I was scrolling through the usual trade evaluation articles. I think they're onto something. Even if Victor was willing to mix it up more, the game HAS trended faster rather dramatically over the last two seasons. And Victor was never much of a mover. Add in his tendency to float indecisively and he looks even slower. When Brindy put him on the 4th line with two direct A to B grinding type wingers, it simplified his responsibilities and he looked better ... perhaps because there was simply less slowing down to think about where he was supposed to be on the ice. But speed ... be it decision making speed or foot speed ... was definitely a problem for Victor recently.

Bottom line ... I like Victor. He's a good kid and by all accounts he was a good teammate. I wish the guy nothing but the best and I hope he figures it out in Minny.

Those with better eyes than mine have noted that it is his weakness in direction/vector changes and those first couple of steps that are his "slowness" weakness more so than pure north-south speed. However, he's not too fast at that, either, probably mostly due to those first couple of steps to get going.

I'd describe Rask as just short of cumbersome. He's not a clod out there, but his feet are NOT quick.

Zykov scored his first goal of the season for Vegas on Tuesday night. He had 5 shots. Vegas has been able to keep him on the roster and are now playing him somewhat regularly.

PDG played his first game in 3 weeks for Milwaukee on Tuesday night, I'm assuming he was hurt.

Skinner in last 21 games, including tonight. 8 goals 5 assists -13. Sabres have some trade deadline soul searching to do, they are about to be passed by the Flyers.

Will the Sabres try to trade Skinner? Would Jeff Skinner veto any efforts to trade him? Just 8 days left until the deadline.

By all accounts Skinner enjoys playing in Buffalo with Eichel and they have been working on an extension. I think he eventually signs about a 5-6 year deal at $8 million a season to stay with the Sabres. Goal scoring can be hard to find and I bet the Sabres hold on to him and pony up.

Not that anyone is missing him, but now that we have hit the trade deadline and the NHL's 23 man roster limit has been lifted, you can book the official end of the Valentin Zykov era for the Canes. Vegas can let him ride out the rest of the season on their roster no matter what happens going forward. No worries about needing his roster spot.

Zykov hasn't played since Feb 9th.

PDG? 3 assists in 6 games for Milwaukee

Klas Dahlbeck? 56 Games, 2 goals 9 assists +25 for CSKA Moscow (doing just fine there)

Sergey Tolchinsky? 37 games, 9 goals 4 Assists for that same CSKA Moscow squad

Ryan Murphy's only game for the Devils this season was our loss where he assisted on one of the Devils' goals.

Skinner disappeared like he normally does for parts of every season and Buffalo predictably fell apart at that same time.

Skinner's first 41 games with the Sabres: 28 Goals 13 Assists +17

Skinners 2nd half as of March 10th (27 games): 8 Goals 9 Assists -17

Vintage Jeff Skinner and yet another playoff miss. I would be VERY cautious about signing Skinner to a huge long term deal. Yep, he can score goals. But he is an absolute black hole in his own end which is why Brind'Amour and crew were more than happy to take whatever they could get for him. Buyer beware!!!! I'm glad the Canes won't be the team considering giving him 6+ years at $7 million+ per. Better someone else than us!!!!

Victor Rask still hasn't returned from his 'stepped on a puck' injury. Who knows if he will ever be back on the ice for the Wild. They can't buy him out if he is hurt either which just makes it all worse for the Wild.

Valentin Zykov remains permanently in the Vegas press box. He will get to enjoy watching Vegas go after another Cup from there. It will be interesting to see if anyone claims him off of waivers next season, assuming of course Vegas has no spot for him on their roster next October.

The Slugs have Dallas and Pittsburgh before coming here on a Saturday. Without Eichel for them, it’s likely he makes his 2nd trip back as a minus player.

If you want to guarantee that your team never makes the playoffs, just sign Skinner and Duchenne.
