Faulk signed

Trade for the #1 overall pick (if we don't get completely lucky in the lottery)....draft Aaron Ekblad. Wait 2-3 years and there is your Top pair monster DMan. How do you trade for the first overall pick you ask? I have no friggin idea, but we could get it if we tried hard enough.

Who in this area media wise makes the players and management accountable??? Chip Alexander? (Snicker)...DeCock...(once or twice a season maybe)...Manascalo? (Hillarious)...Tripper? (Ahhh no).

Booing from the fans for on-ice play and performance...hardly ever!

Too easy down here in this market...no one holds these guys accountable enough like the larger hockey markets, I'm sure the same can be said about playing in Columbus, Tampa, Florida, Dallas, etc.
 
Look, we're a relatively new hockey market that has a solid core of fans relocated from hockey centers, mixed with a bunch of newbies (myself included) who have grown to love the game. We've been to the mountain top twice and got to the conference finals once, which isn't too bad. Ticket sales responded favorably over that time period - until very recently. So as our market matures, the novelty wears off and the fans demand more. That's why JR is now leaving. I don't believe that fans booing or otherwise holding guys accountable (other than through ticket purchases) has any impact.

Depending on who ends up with that pick, you offer them Eric Staal and your own number 1. That's a ready to plug in, proven NHL first line center and a decent enough draft pick.

Frankly, I'd rather spend that pick on a veteran top end defenseman, but those deals can be hard to come by when the going gets tough.
 
The Faulk contract terms could swing either way but overall I like it. I agree he should have been signed for less than McDonagh as I would take McDonagh over Faulk....but they are at least close. The only danger for the Canes (and it is a familiar move done by JR that usually has not worked) is that they are paying for potential over the long term and projecting out his improvement in play. If Faulk does not continue his development this will turn into a bad deal for the Canes but I think Faulk should continue to grow and like the deal.

One thing I read out of the deal is this pretty much guarantees Francis is the new GM. If you know you are going to make a change in GM after the year, why not make that change first and then let the new GM negotiate the deal? I am pretty sure any incoming GM would hate to see long term deals signed with players right before they take over as it could handicap them to a degree. There would still have been time to negotiate with an RFA, like Faulk, before risking another team making an offer sheet once the new GM was on board so I am thinking Francis was involved and agreed. Otherwise the timing seems questionable to me.....and I even like the deal.
 
Because Francis will be a puppet GM with JR still pulling the strings. This is one big sham to shore up miserable ticket sales.
