Francis out as GM.....link

A good comparison to measure what Francis has accomplished is New Jersey and Ray Shero. Francis had a year head start over Shero but each team was in about the same situation roster-wise and cap wise. In the last 3 years, NJ has rebuilt the roster and they look to be back in the playoff hunt way ahead of schedule. Francis had the same, if not better option at the time in Faulk to dangle to Edmonton for Hall, and didn't even seem to be a player in that trade.....or really any trade. Shero has out GM'd the crap out of Francis in a shorter period.

If you want to make Francis look better, you can always compare him to Edmonton and the crap job Chiarelli has done there. At least the worst we can blame Francis for is patience and holding steady. Chiarelli has flat out destroyed Edmonton with dumb deals. Actually, Francis could be a good fit in Edmonton as a GM. I can't imagine Chiarelli lasts much past year end.

I thought we were going to lose another entire season before Dundon would kick over the table, which needs to happen.

New era. New sheet of paper. New management team, including coaching, to implement the vision.

It just had to happen. Glad it's now and not next off-season.

This is a "thank you for your service" moment to Ron Francis. It was a rocky transition from PK's wild ride to payoff with JR bailing just as we jumped the ditch and headed for the cornfield. He at least got us back on the road.

No issue with a GM answering to an owner. Same as it ever was for most orgs that can't afford layers of management. Doesn't mean it might be that way forever, but doesn't sound unreasonable for now.

GM gets named. Coach runs out the string and is thanked for his service at season's end. New coach is named. Brain trust in place for draft and a very active off-season trading season.

My interest is renewed.

Very well put Elsker. I agree, it had to be done and the sooner the better to clean things up. A new GM will most certainly get a quick handle on what he has on board and what he wants to get rid of fast. I kinda hope a new GM is hired in the next few days to get to work ASAP with this sad, underperforming bunch.

I call baloney on the Peters winning anything over Francis. Peters is a dead man walking, no GM is going to come from outside this org and keep Bill Peters behind the bench. All of the coaches are likely to be fired by the new GM.

Speaking of which, we wake up this morning with the Canes a position they have never been in since becoming the Carolina Hurricanes. Looking for a new GM? New owner making his mark? We've talked many times about how interesting the coming offseason will be....well....this one is REALLY going to be interesting.

Adam Gold is an idiot. There's no "narrative" there. Just words strung together hoping someone will "listen".

Dundon can tell the new GM that Peters stays at least in short term which may or may not be a smart idea. That could lead to some guys passing on the GM job, they would want to hire their own coach. Also it might depend on which coaches are available in the offseason.

If Peters survives this summer he certainly won't last much longer with the current record. He would be on a very short lease.

I doubt there is a coaching change for the remaining games. For what purpose? Like that would make a difference in whether or not we can make up 4 or 5 wins in 15 games over the next 30 days?

Instead Peters plays out the season and the change happens in the off-season after the new GM is named. Of course he will want his own guy...who may not even be available just yet.

Looking forward to the Dubas/Quenneville era! :sarcasm

The XM guys were saying Peters is a great coach. They obviously don't watch much. Again, new GM brings in his own coach, is my guess.

old joke - the coach says he gives the same pre game speech before every game. But it works better when the players are better. :)

Is Paul Maurice a much better coach now than he was here and in Toronto or does he just have better players?

So, what is RF in charge of? Kitchen staff, security, parking lot attendants and so on?
I suspect he’ll remain there till a GM job opens up elsewhere and move on.
As for the canes? Will the addition of Tom as defacto GM improve morale and light a torch?
What Will Tom Do(WWTD)?

#1 criteria for a new GM: blood relation to John Tavares.

If Scott Darling is just not a complete train wreck, this team is in a playoff spot right now and Francis probably still has his job. But does that make him a better GM? Not really IMHO. The bigger problems to me are the Rask contract and the lack of development of players at the NHL level.

I actually think Francis seems better served in any other front office position other than a General Manager to be honest. His personality seems better suited for an out of the spotlight role.

I get a kick out of all the media criticizing Tom Dundon as a disturber in all of this like this team has been performing so well and was such a well oiled machine before he arrived. What a joke that is among the hockey media that suddenly Dundon upsets the apple cart.

I think Francis finds another office job, not handling contracts, (GM), elsewhere.....especially Pittsburgh. I think his days here are probably numbered.

And we had to expect the rumblings of "poor, poor Francis....was such a great GM, Dundon is a meddling fool". You knew it would happen.

I agree on Darling that if he would have played anywhere close to matching the expectations and the contract the Canes probably have 5-6 more wins easy and another 10-12 points and comfortably in a playoff spot.

Outside of the goaltending disaster, Francis was a complete failure when it came to recognizing what this team really needed at the start of the season...a better option at center!!! Necas deserved a longer look, not a 4:16 audition in one game on a fourth line. His additions of Kruger, Jooris and TVR in the summer did not do one thing to address the need for goal scoring or point production...he had options in Charlotte with Zykov and others and chose to not even try any of those. Outside of the Williams signing, his summer of 2017 was a disaster of epic proportions.

I'm concern with all the talk about how simpatico Bill Peters is with Dundon. Can you imagine Dundon interviewing prospective GM's and saying oh, BTW, Bill is staying on as head coach and he too will report directly to me. Your job is to get Bill the players he wants. Got it? :facepalm
