Galchenyuk's Ice Time

Although the 2016-2017 NHL season is young, Alex Galchenyuk‘s ice time at center has been minimal. The 22-year-old leads the Montreal Canadiens with 9 goals and 22 points in 23 games. But he sees the ice only 16:03 per game, third on the team for ice time amongst forwards, behind Tomas Plekanec and Max Pacioretty. Galchenyuk deserves more ice time.

"Deserves" and Michel Therrien's allocation of ice time do not go hand-in-hand, people.

Isnt it at this point a simple metter of being 39 % on faceoffs? Suppose he was a modest 46 %, wouldn't he then get those defensive starts and the extra minute or so?

If he got those extra defensive faceoffs, or even PK time, he would be at 18-19 min

I wouldn't give him defensive faceoffs just to get him ice time. But there is plenty of neutral and offensive zone faceoffs that he can use.

Just reduce DD and Plek by one less shift per period and give those to Chucky. That additional 6 shifts per game should bump him to 19-20 minutes.

Exactly,.

As someone has said before, give him 2 minutes on the PP as center and leave DD and Pleks off of it.

If he's going to be your offensive centerman then run with that.

Given that MT likes rolling the lines so much, just do :

1-2-3-4
1-3-4
1-2-3-4
1-2-4
1-2-3-4
1-2-3
...repeat...

It's not that hard.

If he manages to become decent on winning faceoff, he can play on P.K and get more minutes and more goals/assists maybe.

Then maybe you put Max on the first line at times? You dont want your captain and one of your top forwards playing less minutes than Byron?

Maybe this is best thing, but the extra minutes will depend on how many PPs they get and the timimg of the PPs. You don't want him on the ice for 3 minutes if his line drew the penalty in the first place.

Radulov's ice time is also limited, by first line ice time standards. Does he take face-offs too? The coach's love affair was with overachievers up front is beyond the pale. It's flat out revolting. The guy is just a moron.

True, and his ice time will fluctuate based on those variables, but overall, following that guideline, making him the power play specialist at forward should leave Pleks rested for defensive duties and DD away from the power play where he has shown no success.

Absolutely, I'd love to throw Max on the top line at times.

And of course, if any of the other line is having a strong game, they should play more as well.

MT doesn't believe in a "top line." We're all equal up front. The blue line appears to be a very different story, and no, I can't explain why.
