Game #56 - Leafs @ Jackets - Hang These Jackets, Please

The best teams have a good mix of skill, grinders, young guys, leaders, etc.

We have one type of hockey player all throughout the lineup. With terrible intangibles from the top players and a history of shitting the bed yearly in big moments.
Kampf, Engvall, Mikheyev, Bunting, Simmonds play the same style as Auston Matthews?

It’s almost as if getting a bunch of soft skilled players isn’t the best way to build a great team? Yet when alternatives are brought that up that would be a net negative on the talent front you are accused of pumping “leaderbeans”.

Hey, I've got no issue with leaderbeans. Great to have.

Where I take issue with that idea usually is that the people who think we need more of that particular quality usually want it in the form of a player who sucks (Nick Foligno, for example) and/or they want to trade William Nylander for it.

I don't get this. The best teams in the league are skilled, not a bunch of grinders.

I do agree these bitches need more killer instinct and learn to step on the throats of the opposition but that has nothing to do with their style of play.

I disagree.

The best teams have the best mix of skill, grit and timely goaltending.

Our goalies are shit. Have been shit. And will most likely will continue to be shit until we actually develop one.

You need top guys to have a nice mix. Pointing to shitty 3rd and 4th liners who play limited minutes and have no history of winning doesn’t do anything.

My ultimate point for years now is this core needs to change and doesn’t work.

They lost because their best players sucked ass. Not because they didn't have some grit grinder on the 3rd line.
It's ironic. He's basically taking the position that we have these softies who add no intangibles on the ice and just score, and yet we lose in the playoffs because those scorers don't score.

Ding ding ding! So maybe their best players are the ones that should be changed? Or we could keep trying to put a circular peg into a square hole.

The game changes in the playoffs. Soft as butter gutless talent doesn’t usually do well.

How does that change what we're seeing right now though?

Trade Marner for Tkachuk (believe that was one of your suggestions) and you're just breaking up one of the best lines in hockey and you still have sub .900 goaltending for over two months.

Not to mention the flames definitely don't take Marner for Tkachuk anyway. Neither team likely makes the move. Come up with something realistic at least.

Right now isn’t my biggest concern tbh. It’s the inevitable playoff collapse that is. And our goaltending isn’t the only issue. A team that keeps losing multiple goal leads has more than just a goalie issue. Eventually somebody on that bench needs to punch enough ears to get a good counter shift and to buckle down and back up a struggling goalie.

And improving the goaltending in general is also a huge need that I have acknowledged and has gone unaddressed by Dubas for years, so no argument there.

Whatever happens in this game, serious red flags still exist with this club. I hope they can somehow all stop being giant bitches in April but there really isn’t any reason to be confident given their history.
