GDT #19 - Leafs @ Pens, 7 pm - Revenge of the Jocks

Heading for a massive faceplant in the playoffs. Not one of those lose in game 7 first rounds we're used to, but a lose 4-1 and out type.

And it makes no sense. On paper, the forwards have never been better. G has held up well enough to win. D is somewhat patchwork and porous, but still should be good enough. They just can't put it together. And it all starts and ends with M&M. These guys don't play elite, then the team isn't elite.

Keefe also has received far too much leash for the results he'd gotten. It was insane to bring him back, and keeping him is tanking the season.

May be time to to back to the third f high 5 on 5 on the first line.
This whole dirty goal play deep thing isnt working for 34 or 16

Also, I needed a win these last two games. I feel fine but am sitting out an annual thanksgiving street hockey tournie tomorrow as a precautionary measure because of last week's concussion. I put the team together, I've been anticipating the tournie since last year's, and now can't play. I'm so fucking annoyed and the Leafs did nothing to help me feel better. Losing on Saturdays put me in such shitty moods.

I was upset at some wins earlier in the year because we were playing really badly.

But we're finally starting to play the right way again. Things are looking up.

I don't see them doing much right. Pure chicken with its head cut off style. Passes going to no man's land, no real strategy, just trying to bust through the D, and the big guns showing no real urgency until it gets too late. They used to do this shit and always tie it up with a minute or two to go, and now it's not happening this year.

Feels like the team needs a trade. If Klingberg is gone, they should do it sooner rather than later. EK still feels like he'd have been what we needed, and I'd still go for another D that can bring offense. Rielly is the only one back there who can do anything. The rest are completely inept outside of their own zone, except maybe Gio, but he can't do that much anymore.

They've been better than earlier for sure. But matthews-marner being this shit for this long is not something I'm fully used to. But overall post klingberg they've played like a good, not great team. Which is an upgrade from what was tbh straight trash earlier on.

they're playing well but the big guns aren't scoring.

in the last 6gms Matthews has 2pts and Mitch has 3.

Willy and Tavares are now pointless in the last 3gms.

but overall, unlike earlier in the year, we've been carrying the play, and unlike last year we're getting consistent depth scoring.

It's unfair to lump Matty in with Marner. Matty has been inconsistent, but is still playing more or less at his level. It's that he has no help from his wingman who is supposed to be setting up all the plays. So, if nothing is doing with Marner, Matty has to try to bust through the zone on his own on every single rush. He seems hesitant to go to Knies, almost like he has to give it to Marner or he won't sleep well at night. If Matty would pass off to Knies or dump it in more for Knies to retrieve it, it might relieve the burden on Marner and open things up for him. But Marner isn't even showing flashes of his creative brilliance that defines his game. He's looking totally overmatched by every team we play against. His point total is completely misleading.

Marner has been worse but that doesn't mean Matthews has been typical Matthews. Its possible that both can be playing poorly.

I miss when Marner and Matthews skated hard to retrieve pucks and put backside pressure. These two are just waiting for the game to come to them. Pathetic effort.

I still say they're trying to get the fatheaded fuck fired.

Seems they're not working hard enough at that either.

I mean, the guy is still basically at the top of the goal leaders, so it's hard to fault him too much, even though he's scored those goals in bunches over just a handful of games. I'm not happy with his play, I'm not saying I'm satisfied, but if I had to give him a grade, I'd say he's been a B or a B+ being generous on account of his goal total. I give Marner a D.

I thought tonight Marner looked like past years bad Marner. He gets the puck into good areas and then rushes a pass or gets a bit of bad luck - like jarry getting his stick on that rebound at the side of the net.

Hopefully it’s a sign he’s getting his game back in order.

I found Matthews game tonight baffling. Not a lot of effort. Maybe frustrate with lil mitchy b

kinda funny tho.

5v5 scoring

1. Marner 4gls/13pts
2. Matthews 7gls/12pts
3. Nylander 5gls/11pts
4. Tavares 4gls/10pts
