The State Fair roadie starts in Winnipeg.

With TVR out, the Canes recalled Trevor Carrick this morning and should be available. TVR was placed on IR. Peters said he wants to get Necas in the lineup soon but no word on where or when. He also said he wants to get Ward a game.

Winnipeg is 2-2 so far, losing their first 2 by a combined 13-5 but winning their next 2 by a combined 9-4. Nik Ehlers has 4 goals, Mark Scheifele has 3 goals and 2 assists. Mason goes in goal.

Fox Sports Carolinas for TV.

No lineup changes for the Canes but Peters is trying Slavin/Faulk and Hanifin/Pesce again.

No pre-game show tonight and the game may be joined in progress because Fox Sports Carolinas has a football game at 3:30 that will inevitably run long.

Canes PP still sucks. Skinner turns the puck over down low, Jets Break and Canes killer Bryan Little scores.

And Skinner redeems himself on the next PP off the crossbar and its 1-1.

Jordan Staal asleep at the wheel all night long. For a shutdown guy he sure gets beat a lot in his own zone, he simply has to be better at that pay grade.

Thought the Jets controlled almost all of the 3rd period. And I agree about Jordan - he's had nothing going and looks plodding and lethargic, just like.....oh forget it. If he's the Captain and continues to play like this, he may be leading a sinking ship. (I know it's Faulk's job on away games.)

Great goaltending by Darling. Not going to win many games if the only player who scores is Skinner. Too many "offensive weapons" MIA- teravainen, Staal, lindholm, rask, Williams...

Ok not much to say with the loss and another one goal effort by the good guys... however, I will state that we had a great second half of the second period as a team. Not sure if the Jets were gassed but we had a step on them from about the 9 minute mark of the second right up until the end of the frame. The third wasn't so good. Jets seemed to impose creativity a little too easily.

I will add that Darling made two outstanding saves to keep us in it after we had been taking it to the Jets. In the past, those were almost always goals. You know, Canes do a lot of skating, for whatever reason (snakebit, hot goalie, whatever-) can't score. Then the opposition gets a turn over and pots one?

Anyway, we'll see if we can get some goals now. But please put your defensive specialist center on the third line. And I'm about thinking its time we give Aho an aUdition at center. He may not have the ideal frame, but everything else about the kid tells me he'll probably do just fine...

It's time to trade Staal back to the Pens.

Staal for Kessel e5 :sarcasm

Although seriously, Kessel's $9M salary this season settles down to 2 @ $7M and 2 @ $6M over the next four to more closely align with his $6.8M cap hit.

There's some points for you.

Why is everyone so surprised about the disappearing Staal. He's a third line checking center. Why anyone thinks otherwise is a mystery. Yes, I'm looking at you coach Peters. Sort your lines out based on talent not expectations. Thanks.

Over-slotted as usual, it's the same old song and dance...not enough offense, many of the same guys that are paid to produce offense just don't produce consistently enough. Staal should be nowhere near a power play as much as he is but I guess it comes down to the old "who else are you going to use"...

1 or 2 goals against the Oilers certainly wont do the job so everyone should hope for some offense showing up soon.

Agreed on no Staal on the PP. Complete waste of a body. Alternate Slavin and Pesce for big bodies in front of the goalie on PP Units 1 and 2, like Big Buff used to do.

Look. This is nothing new. When Peters’ teams don’t score, it always looks the same ... tons of effort and no traffic in front. In short, we get very blunt in attack and spend most of our possession time in the corners. Same thing we’ve seen the last two games.

Part of it is personnel, but I’m not as willing to give the coach a pass like I have in the past. I don’t think this system suits our personnel and it’s up to Peters to find something that does.

Jordan Staal should be capable enough, playing with Lindholm and Aho, to put up 20 goals and 50 points. That's not too much to ask of Jordan. Right now the entire offense looks incapable (again). They better get that figured out quickly. This team doesn't make the playoffs without 20 more goals than last season's total. The better goaltending isn't going completely cover a lack of goal scoring.

The last 2 games lack of offense is not all because of Jordan Staal. Yeah we got duped into thinking Jordan had some above average offensive talent but he has some skills.

Here’s the thing. We got duped into that FIVE stinking years ago and he’s yet to produce a 50 point season. At this point giving him offensive firepower on the wings and expecting things to improve goes a bit beyond simple confusion and straight into pig headed ignorance.

Can you tell my patience with this coaching staff making the same mistakes year after year has worn thin? Because it has.

Let's go back to last season.

Early January Jordan is centering Derek Ryan and Brock McGinn

The 2nd week in January, Jordan Staal is centering Brock McGinn and Elias Lindholm

On January 23rd, Aho-Staal-Lindholm debuts.....in a 6-1 loss at Washington.

(NHL shift charts is how I pulled this info and those dates).

Jordan Staal played 36 games starting that January 23rd. 7 goals, 15 assists.

That's a 50 point pace.

Lindholm over the 36 games went for 6 goals 20 Assists (59 point pace)

Aho had 12 and 12 (55 points)

That production over 82 games would be just fine, assuming that the other 6 forwards are delivering as well. This i the ongoing problem...you might get Aho-Staal-Lindholm hot for a month, only to have Ryan, Rask, Teravainen and Stempniak struggle during that stretch. Way too streaky and way too easy to keep us from the danger spots on the ice. We are too easily thwarted (on the PP and 5v5).

There is a lot to see here. We have two offensive rookies on the roster. The one playing now is on the line with Skinner. I like this rookie but think he should be playing in the minors right now making the mistakes and turnovers he would there. I feel like there may be some frustrations on that line. I noticed one of our new veteran penalty killers has not figured to run from one forward to the next. Maybe this is why they're trying to get our rookie to learn penalty kill. I noticed everybody skating around but nobody stopping at the net or staying in front or at least in the vicinity of the net.

I do have an idea how to fix this. Let's trade for a number one center who can play with our number one winger and send Derek Ryan to the wing. And send our forward rookies back to the minors or over to Europe.
Side note I really like the way our rookie defenseman has developed along with his play.
