GDT: Canes v. Leafs 12/18 7:00

I know BK has been banging the drum for changes in Charlotte and given that we've not had much successful development, it really is time for JD to go. I finally looked up to see how long he has been coaching the Canes AHL affiliate (Albany and Charlotte)-- since 2008. Not sure who he developed, but know that unless we've drafted an NHL ready player, we haven't seen one emerge from Charlotte-- Bellemore?

Current roster includes Checkers alumni Rask, Nash, Boychuck, Terry, Bellemore, Jordan, and Shugg.

And Lindholm spent half a dozen games there honing his American game, although that's really not long enough to count.

Part of the lack of Checkers success this season is we now have what little talent with which he had to work. We're just not that deep...yet.

I don't know the answer to this and I'd be curious to know, but what is the average number of players on an nhl roster that have matured through the team's ahl affiliate, as opposed to basically coming straight from juniors or coming over from one of the euro leagues? And not only the number of players, but where those players slot in on the depth chart? It would not surprise me if the Canes are about average in this regard, but it also would not surprise me if the Canes are well below average. There are a few other teams that always seem to be pulling guys from their affiliates and getting good results when injuries hit, and then there's the almighty Wings system too. But there are a lot of other teams out there that you don't really hear much about regarding their ahl production one way or the other. Just sayin, I'm not convinced that Daniels is well below average, but I'm not convinced that he isn't either. How's that for noncommittal?

The current AHL guys playing for the Canes, are doing decently well. And I attribute that to them playing under Peters, and NOT being in Charlotte under Daniels. I think Daniel's track record speaks volumes.

Good news then is that any one with any NHL level of talent potential is going to spend some time at this season-long training camp we're now running.

So their next stage of development will be with the A-team, including Brind'Amour and Smith. I suspect if injuries don't open up slots, then trades will.

I expect to see Rissanen and Biega for the defense when the opportunity arises. But going to be harder to find forward slots until something gives involving wingers. And we may already have all the NHL material anyway.
