GDT: Canes vs Jets 2/4/14

Now the last 2 games before the break almost become must wins. They really could have used this win. The PP very well is going to cost us the playoffs yet again. Its such a shame because there doesn't appear to be any way to fix it (at least not with the current coaching staff and players).

You can't win every game, but to lose one at the end like that when at least a point was 1 minute away is a real downer. This team is still in it of course, but every point is precious, you just can't let them slip away like that.

Agree with JB, it was less about effort than timing. I said then they were a half-step behind on everything: skating, passing, puck pusuit, shooting... they lost damn near every loose puck. It was a complete lack of effectiveness. Muller was again out-coached - by the guy he replaced! And he says it was acceptable.

James, I like your thinking but fear it would just be a waste of Vanek, another black hole he doesn't want to be in.

You can't look at the Islanders cap situation for Vanek, the Slugs are picking up almost $1.4 million of it. He's coming off that 7 year/$50 million contract from 07-08 after the offer sheet from Edmonton, so he has a $7.1 million cap hit/$6.8 million actual salary. And AH is right, when he's not engaged, he's invisible.

The Islanders are going to need a goalie though. Nabokov is a UFA and Kevin Poulin is...Kevin Poulin. But I can't see them trading for a UFA to be like Khudobin. They could be left holding the bag. And unlike other many other teams, the Islanders need help getting to the floor instead of avoiding the ceiling. Ruutu by himself lowers the Isles cap number but they could afford to give Tlusty a big raise.

One thing I can all but guarantee ... we aren't a player for Vanek. He's a luxury item for the short run and a budget problem in the long run. Plus, he's so bloody inconsistent. Somebody's going to over-pay the guy, but we've got enough of that already thank you very much.

I was dreaming that we'd rent him and unload bad/big contracts too

I get that, but I don't think we're high enough in the standings to be thinking about purely rental players. Dumping contracts? Oh yeah ... every team should ALWAYS be open to those opportunities when they come down the pike.
