GDT - Make it 7 Devils @ Leafs 7:30PM EST TSN

It shows that Carlyle just can't get them prepared for the gimme games.

They take on and beat the good teams just fine, but the losers own us.

I'm sure our record against good teams and shit teams show that.

It's all a coaching thing. He sucks shit.

I get why people blame Carlyle, but lack of giving a shit is not the coaches fault.

Carlyle is one of the many problems this current team has. Lack of consistently giving a shit is a MAJOR problem.

Bernier wasn't very good today. Gardiner needs to be better. Rielly is looking exactly how a you'd expect a 20 year old sophomore to look.

No Komarov hurts. Big energy guy when the team plays flat, often brings them back to life.

And boy do Jersey play an eye-sore brand of hockey.

And our "top line" will probably get an undeserved free pass from playing a garbage game because they managed to all get a point on the PP with a minute to go.

Would be nice for Bozak and JVR to not be completely useless when Kessel is banged up/not on his game.

I knew a stinker was coming our way, and sure a stinker we got.

I agree, you can blame Carlyle all day long, and he IS part of the problem, but when the team time after times doesn't care to show up vs. a vulnerable opponent you can't just pin it on the coach. The players are the one who plays on the ice.

- Carlyle is a dummy for sticking with his '1st line'. Of the 5 goals allowed, it was either scored with the first line hemmed in on the ice, or it was scored because the first line was hemmed in and someone had to take a penalty. It is clear Kessel is playing with an injury, but even before that, the first line is a very poor possession line that is very vulnerable defensively against a cycle game. We tied the game twice, but we kept 'leaking' through the first line and eventually we couldn't overcome.

- Kadri's line had another strong game, and the 3rd line looked good too, until the game was out of reach.

- Gardiner and Rielly were a problem last night, Robidas didn't help, and Holzer finally looked like a guy who's just been called up

- Bernier has never looked great throughout the 5-0-1 streak, but he looked especially bad last night

Losing one after a 5-0-1 run is acceptable, you wish the team has shown more effort against a vulnerable opponent like the Devils, but that tells you what this team is. Let's hope they get back on the horses on Sat night.

Carlyle on our #1 line, after last night's game:

I didn’t think our top line was very good. And those minutes showed that.

Well, the thing is with that line, they need to simplify on nights like tonight. And go into more of a structured game where instead of having to play in the [defensive] zone for the majority of the shift, try and be a little more structured and support the puck, make stronger plays so they can get in the offensive zone.

It’s a lot easier for that group to play in the offensive zone than it is the defensive zone. And that’s the process of learning when you’re playing the opposition [like this]. They were dominating us along the walls and winning the puck battles. So there’s a method to break that. That is to make sure you get your fair share of pucks in [deep] and don’t extend your shifts so we get fresh people out there.

That’s what happened. They’d extend the shift in our zone and we’d have to change right away. We didn’t have a chance to get much offence going as a line.
Yes, yes it is Randy, and yes, they were getting dominated along the walls and losing puck battles. And that's because, while the guys on our 1st line are all great offensive players that our important pieces of our team, all three of them are awful when they don't have the puck on their sticks in our zone, and none of them can win a battle along the boards to save their lives.

So, since these guys are all established NHLers and unlikely to change at this point, maybe instead of continually trying to shove a square peg into a round hole, you should break up the first line and pair them up with any number of the forwards we've got that actually are doing a good job in the defensive zone, and along the wall. Leo Komarov. Mike Santorelli. Daniel Winnik. Nazem Kadri. Peter Holland. Even David Booth. There's no shortage of options this year.

It isn't ****ing rocket science.

The dedication to that top line is kind of ridiculous. They are painful to watch in tight checking games. JVR doing one hand on the stick flyby's is a joke for a guy his size.

You hate to break up that second line as they are showing some real chemistry. And I don't think Holland is ready to be promoted to the top line. Maybe Just a Winnik for JVR swap. Adds some physicality and defensive ability to the top line and some offensive punch to the third line. A real balanced attack ala Pat Quinn. Kessel is gonna Kessel either way.

Randy's devotion to the top line and Bernier is the biggest problem facing this team. He can't get them ready for games, and never, EVER considers a change to them.
We all know damn well the next game will be the same top line and the same starting goalie, regardless of the depth of this team.
I know Kessel is playing injured, and I have zero issues with his play of late. Bozak is still winning faceoffs, at least. JVR was nowhere to be found last night. A shuffle of the deck is badly needed.
I was asked not to suggest firing Carlyle in every post. Yet it's clear his in-actions are hurting this team. So let me re-word it: these guys won't flourish as well as they can until somebody else is behind our bench.
