He's still leading the team in points, even if a sizable percentage of his points are second assists and empty net goals.
What about his two shorties and two SH assists?
He continues to be opportunistic in his defensive play and I will give him credit for becoming much more adept at that aspect of his game. And his breakaway conversion rate seems improved, but I didn't check stats. I'm not saying the boy ain't good.
But I am pointing out that a lot of his point-a-game (which he is not) aura are assists that are more of the nature of the puck goes through him a lot, and sometimes the puck goes in. But his assists are not of the Thornton or Sedin level of playmaking passes. Definitely part of the action, but not the reason the goal was scored.
Last night was a good example. Jovanovski's outlet pass up the middle (rarely a good idea) came in hot and to the feet of Bergenheim, bouncing off his skates as a beautiful drop pass to Staal in the slot.
Staal then sent the puck straight down the pipeline through a partially screening Gudbranson to Thomas' pads. Rebound then goes off Gudbanson's skate, turns 90 degrees, popping out to Tlusty from the right side looking at a wide open net.
Yeah, assist. But,again, I'm just not nearly impressed with points from that side of the hyphen in his case as I am with goal production out of Eric. He's just an average playmaker, but can be a spectacular goal scorer.
