GDT: Panthers at Canes 2/7/14

Wow. I knew Staal wasn't doing well, but I can't believe he's had only one PP goal! That's insane!

Only 8 even strength goals with a goalie in the net (3 empty-netters).

That's one out of 6+ games.

Most of his points are assists...and not of the playmaking nature, either. Just puck goes through him...a lot.

He touches it along the way up the ice. Someone does something with it. Profit.

Nash scores again.
And now Semin 2-0

Gave up one 2-1 then to end the period Bellemore scores. 3-1 'Canes.

He's still leading the team in points, even if a sizable percentage of his points are second assists and empty net goals.

What about his two shorties and two SH assists?

A good game, the canes played well except for 10 minutes in the first after they'd scored 2 goals.
Faulk played very well as did sekera on d. Khubby by was pretty brilliant in net.
The ones that scared me were Hainsy and Liles. Phew
The differences, the canes gave Florida no room, fraught in the corners, cut off passing lanes and fore checked.

Can they repeat tomorrow night?

I must have been at a different game. It was pond hockey out there...too loose defensively and Florida missed some easy chances. Score was not indicative in my opinion...we have to play a much better d game tmrw night.

My impression of the game is that the Panthers just didn't look very good. We played competently, but this was not a great performance for us. Dobby was outstanding. Faulk and Sekera were too. We did get to chase Timmy which was fun. Watching him sit near the visitor tunnel after he was yanked from the game, I noticed he's developing quite a bald spot - visible from the third level!

There can be no doubt about who is the starting goalie for this team. Ward hasn't played nearly as good as Khudobin is now, in years.

The game was "fun", any big win is. But the game was MUCH closer than the score indicated in my opinion. Florida had plenty of scoring chances, some pretty decent ones too. But between Khudobin and the pipes, only one got in. The Canes will have to figure out a way to play loose offensively, and much tighter in their own end. Better teams will clobber them if they play like they did last night. Khudobin is GOOD, but he's not superman.

And back to Khudobin: it's going to be VERY disappointing if he goes to another bidder this summer. I can't watch him play this year, and not think that he is the guy to keep. And the contract that JR is rumored to have offered him though, says that JR wants to pay him to be a backup to Cam's huge salary. I'm not at all surprised that he turned down the reported offer.

He continues to be opportunistic in his defensive play and I will give him credit for becoming much more adept at that aspect of his game. And his breakaway conversion rate seems improved, but I didn't check stats. I'm not saying the boy ain't good.

But I am pointing out that a lot of his point-a-game (which he is not) aura are assists that are more of the nature of the puck goes through him a lot, and sometimes the puck goes in. But his assists are not of the Thornton or Sedin level of playmaking passes. Definitely part of the action, but not the reason the goal was scored.

Last night was a good example. Jovanovski's outlet pass up the middle (rarely a good idea) came in hot and to the feet of Bergenheim, bouncing off his skates as a beautiful drop pass to Staal in the slot.

Staal then sent the puck straight down the pipeline through a partially screening Gudbranson to Thomas' pads. Rebound then goes off Gudbanson's skate, turns 90 degrees, popping out to Tlusty from the right side looking at a wide open net.

Yeah, assist. But,again, I'm just not nearly impressed with points from that side of the hyphen in his case as I am with goal production out of Eric. He's just an average playmaker, but can be a spectacular goal scorer.

EDIT: Video for goals can be viewed here.

Hey ... whatever works. Points obtained, opponent routed, Thomas chased and generally a good time was had by everybody who isn't counting style points and worried about who does what on a given night.

I thought JR's rule of thumb was not to negotiate during the season. I know he has violated that on the odd time or two, so would be interested in hearing a bit more about your rumor.

JR was rumored to have offered him 3y , $4.5m...which is backup pay. That tells me, if it's true, that Cam isnt going anywhere.
