Matthews should get around 20 mins a night. I just don’t Babcocks icetime useage and tbese lines. There better be some sort of long term agenda at play here because a lot of players are currently being mis-used

I honestly don't mind Babcock's overall strategy of playing the big guns less.

Both because that might help to keep them healthy and in good game condition throughout the course of a long season, and playoff run that'll hopefully go longer than one round this year, and because we really do have three forward lines that should be capable of producing at a good clip offensively, and all of them should be getting their fair share of ice-time.

The devil is in the details, though, and that's where I start having issues with what Babcock is doing.

Like Leo still being a fixture on that Kadri line when he's been a black hole all year, and Kadri's been stone cold for a few weeks now. Or the apparently indispensable eight minutes a night Matt Martin gives us. Kapanen coming up and quickly getting sent back down, despite jacking up the team speed and scoring a couple of goals. Leivo never getting a decent run of games no matter how he plays.

Or him briefly experimenting with Nylander at center and quickly abandoning that idea in spite of how well Nylander played the position. His unflinching loyalty to Roman Polak, who by every available measure over his 26 games has made us a worse team whenever he's been in the lineup ahead of any of Borgman, Carrick or Dermott. His determination to keep the JVR/Bozak/Marner line intact, despite the fact that he doesn't trust that line defensively at all, even when Tyler Bozak isn't playing extremely poorly.

I'm sure Babcock's stubborn determination & self-confidence has played a large part in his success in life, but boy does it ever get in his way sometimes too.

It's just overcoaching. His goes overboard with the matchup game. Always has.

It's especially silly against a team like Ottawa, who doesn't have a line that needs to be matched.

I definitely think this is a big factor. He want's his best players healthy and "rested" for the playoffs. That's a huge value.
