GDT - Third time's the chime | 7:30PM SNET

Bernier - plays the game like a franchise goalie, that's his upside. Game-stealing ability, handles the puck well and limits second chances with good rebound control.

Reimer - plays every game like it might be his last. Works his ass off, but relies on a blocking style for his first save (pushing out rebounds), and pure athleticism to make the second stop.

With Berns you can manage the game better, with Reims you are facing off a lot in your defensive zone.
 
Both of them seem to play better with lots of shots. A stinker or 2 might get by, but you remember the dozen great saves too.
 
Reimer handling the puck like a grenade is an eyesore. The lack of rebound control hurts him as well.

A concern that i have with Bernier is that he seems to let in some shitty goals on a fairly consistent basis.

This is my issue with him.

There are way too many of these to rely on him as your starter. I don't know any true #1s who let in so many bad goals. The last game was a perfect example. On a normal night, does Lundqvist give up 3 stinkers out of 4 goals? Sure, once in a while he will, but not like every second or third game he plays.

Reimer doesn't seem to have those moments on such a regular basis. And I believe he's proven himself of being more able to make the spectacular save and to shut down the other side when the score requires him to.

I don't think there's an absolute clear cut winner between them, but the last time Reimer had the #1 job, he was just about the best #1 we've ever had.
 
I feel more comfortable watching Bernier than i do Reimer. Anytime i see the puck go behind the net and Reimer tries to go get it, i have to cover my eyes.

On a normal night, neither does Bernier. We have though, seen Lundqvist give up shit goals against us, if we're going to play the super small sample game.

Bernier did have the larger sample, but Reimer's numbers were still better. Not to mention Reimer got us into the playoffs and posted great numbers there.

Why should it?

He may not be letting up more goals than Reimer, but he tends to give up bad ones, at bad times, that deflate us, that start us out from behind and set the tone in many games.

He can have a game where he gives up two shit goals relatively early, and then ends up saving 30 of 32 shots. A .937 SV% is pretty darn good, but if we're playing from behind from the get go, with the other team sitting back and keeping us stifled, do we say he played a great game if we lose 2-0 or 2-1? Bad goals or inopportune goals kill.
 
It's not like Riemer doesn't give up shitty goals too...at the wrong time. I'd like to see a stat that shows how many times the Leafs get scored on with a minute or so left in a period.
 
It was odd listening to them talk about Bernier's terrible glove had the other night. That used to be Reimers domain.
