General Leafs News & Notes

Yeah, Broll is a good one. I like Ashton too, and the lack of scoring seems to make him destined for the 4th line. D'Amigo is also a nifty player. I'd rotate the three on the wings of the 4th line, and use Broll where more muscle is needed and the other two when more speed and skill.

Ashton has some offensive pedigree...don't be shocked if some of these chances he's starting to get regularly start going in shortly.

He should definitely have better touch than what we've seen, but so far he hasn't shown much of a knack for production.

It's early sure, and he's had poor linemates for much of the time he's been up (i.e., Orr), but still I'd have expected a bit more.

I really like him though, even if just for a bottom line role.

Big thing to remember about Ashton is that he's still only 22...and over his entire body of work in the AHL (130 games), he scored at a 27 goal pace.

I don't expect him to be an offensive dynamo by any stretch, but shots sooner or later turn into goals, and he gets shots on net at a reasonable clip. Even in just 6-7 minutes a game, he's likely going to put 50-60 shots on net. That's good for 5 goals at a league average SH%

I could easily see him being a 10-15 goal scorer if he's able to play his way into 3rd line minutes.

Agreed.

Orr and McLearn were useful last year. This year they are not even NHL players. Dump them both.

Yup they're a waste of cap space and a roster spot. Mclaren hasn't seen much (if any ice time this year) but Orr hasn't been doing anything since Parros knocked himself out in the opening game, I'd rather give the 4th line spot to a guy like Bodie or Ashton hell even Broll anyone but Orr though.

Peter Holland (lace bite) & Carter Ashton (hand) not skating; appears Greg McKegg may make debut tonight

It will be interesting to see how McKegg does. In preseason he looked like the kind of player Carlyle would love.

Looking forward to seeing McKegg ... never have time to watch the Marlies. He's done well since a slow start to the season (statistically, at any rate).

Always cool to see one of our draft picks make his NHL debut. McKegg's certainly come a long way since the beginning of the season, when in the midst of our center crisis, the team went out and signed Jerred Smithson and traded for Peter Holland rather than give a struggling McKegg a shot at the NHL level.

The question is whether he or McClement will be taking over that 3rd line spot in Holland's absence.

Hey look guys, it's Mason Raymond being physical in front of the opponent's net:

Well McKegg sent down and Smithson has been Recalled.... if this move is being made because players will be back and we just need a body to put in the pressbox I'm fine with it. However if Smithson actually see's the ice it's a terrible terrible move.

Also looks like Clarkson will play tomorrow night

I love the logic that we use when determining call ups

Player A is an extremely important part of the Marlies, a top 6 forward that is expected and trusted to be a top contributor in all situations. Player A possibly has a future with the team and a chance at becoming an important player for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Player B is a depth player on the Marlies, who the coach of the Marlies plays far less than he plays Player A. Player B has no future in with the Leafs and likely no future with any other NHL team either.

Well, obviously when there's an injury, we call up player B....every.****ing.time.

So reports are coming out of NY that Vanek has rejected a big deal from NYI and will now be traded.

He's having a pretty decent year. Goals are down but he's still pretty much PPG. And we're missing one more top level sniper to put on the second line with Kadri and Lupul. Vanek to me seems like the perfect fit. So........here's a trade idea.

NYI is terrible in net, with no apparent savior on the way. And they're also weak on the back end. They'll be looking for a 1st rounder to recoup the one they gave to Buffalo, but I think they're not going to get far in that search, maybe getting a late 1st from a team like Pittsburgh, which isn't worth much.

I would think they might be open to trading Vanek for Reimer and Franson. They get a pretty proven young goalie on the outs with his team, and a big, young, strong dman who can QB their PP and is putting up pretty strong point totals for the second year in a row. We can throw in a low level prospect or two to make them feel better if necessary, like Biggs or Ross. But I'd think it's possible, and then we give Vanek the big money deal he's looking for, which would basically keep him here for at least the next 5 years with the current crop we have. Then we'd have:

JVR Bozak Kessel
Lupul Kadri Vanek

Two pretty sick, dangerous lines....
