General Leafs News & Notes

He's 28 and has never seen the NHL playoffs, let's not be silly and throw around powerful words here.

"Warriors" are proven in the playoffs, and nowhere else.

No, at the right price though I'd like him to stick around.

I'm not sure he's gonna cost 5 million though. Plek had a few more things going for him when he signed that.

Pleks signed that deal at a ~56 million dollar cap. Grabo will be staring at a 68-70 million dollar cap, Grabs also might enter it with back to back 30 goal seasons.

Pleks also never went to free agency, had he gone to free agency, he probably gets more. Like I said, I'm cool with a hometown discount for him to stay, but he's not worth market value to us, and if he finishes with 30 goals, 55ish points again...market value is definitely 4.5 million+

tough call.

and another tough call with Kuly. and Mac.

I like all three of those guys, but we know who my first choice is despite the numbers disappearing this year.

As for the other two, they're both good when they want to be. And they're both awesome at times.

very difficult to decide what to do with kulemin, though.
Yeah. Even if he turns things around somewhat in the second half, I wouldn't think that he'd want to sign a long-term deal coming off of this disappointing season. A one or two year deal at around what he's currently making (plus the 10% raise necessary for a qualifying offer, I suppose) would probably be in everybody's best interests, though I guess the question is, when is he eligible to become a UFA?

It's a tough call for Burke.

I think with the kindda first half that Grabs and Kulemin had, the duo would re-sign for a pretty reasonable price.

However, with Kadri being ready, if you have Grabs in the fold, then the question is for how long do you plan to slot Kadri into the 3rd hole, which is a complete waste of his talent?

In the long run, Kadri should be in the 1-2 spot, and Burke probably plans to bring in another big center. Even if Bozak is eventually traded away, what do you do with Grabs? Do you plug him in the 3 hole? But at $4-5M a year that's pretty expensive for a 3rd line center.

Kulemin is much easier to figure out but that's the dilemma with Grabs.

There's a few things to remember about our center situation. One is that we don't really have a "third line". We've spread out our offense for most of the year by having our third-best center (Bozak) on the 1st line, and Connolly and Grabovski anchoring what are essentially two #2 lines for us. Another is that we still haven't seen any evidence that Wilson or Burke have any plan to play Kadri at center ice, either in the short-term or the long-term, so Grabovski "being in his way" isn't really something we have to worry about.

Then if we either acquire a legitimate #1 center from somewhere else, or Colborne's ready to go by next year, our log-jam at center will resolve itself when Connolly comes off the books after next year.

If we can keep the cap hit down by giving term, Grabo is a super-elite 3rd line center, and I'd take him for that role any day.

If you signed him to around 4.5, only next year would it hurt. After that Armstrong and Lombardi come off the books, two guys that make too much and do too little for the 3rd line.

$4.5 is too much IMO. Don't forget they'll need to resign Lupul and replace Connolly as #1 center after next season too. Plus Kadri's deal will be up too. And Mac. And Gunnar. You don't want to commit too much money on secondary players.

You're right. Tough call, but I'd love to keep him.

I thought this was kinda cool. Went on a date with a girl who was doing AIDS research in Uganda, she came across a kid wearing a Leafs jersey.

Connolly missed practice this morning, and Wilson was not available to speak about that after practice. "Other team officials" said it was nothing more than just a maintenance day for the 'veteran' (30 yrs old) since there are 3 days in between games.

Connolly did not miss a shift in last night's game and finished with just over 16 of icetime.

Doesn't sound like there's much to worry about.
