My kids were getting players to sign a free Tshirt that was a giveaway and as he signed, I mentioned that we recalled his NHL game/goal and how memorable it was. Surma only played 2 games for the Canes. The game in 02-03 was the game he scored his goal (and hurt himself celebrating). He played another in 03-04 and had an assist. Surma is still playing professional hockey, playing the last 4 seasons in the Central Hockey League. Tomas Kurka spent the end of the 02-03 season shuttling back and forth between Lowell and Raleigh because both teams had injury problems.
 
The team played it's best stretch of hockey with Zach Boychuk in the lineup. Wasn't quite ten games was it... that's it. Coincidence or irony?
 
I finally got around to watching the Karmanos interview. Luke wrote about it today in his N&O piece. You can imagine, he did not find it at all amusing.

What I got from the interview, was that Karmanos thinks the Canes would have won the Metro is not for Justin Peters losing 6 games. He, at least twice, blamed the season on the 3rd string goalie.

Had I not put my deposit down on seats for next season and entered into a new seat arrangement with others, this interview would have kept me away- for good!

The best line in Luke's column: (Karmanos has said coach Peter Laviolette benefited from a “perfect storm” that season. It is increasingly apparent Laviolette was not the one who stumbled into success.)

Second best line: It took only 4 minutes and 16 seconds, but people realize this now: This franchise’s issues start at the top and work their way all the way down to the ice
 
Third best line:

"I think people need to know that we have a very, very good hockey team" although surely he knows that the NHL keeps annual standings that indicate otherwise.

I like the guy, but maybe the fact that Nathan Gerbe was leading the team in goals for a good potion of the first part of the year was a good indicator of how far out of the playoffs this team would end up.

Going 1-7 in their first 8 games post-Sochi didn't help either.

Cross-Conference games were below average (10-13-5), and we were swept by Boston and Tampa Bay, only earning two overtime points in six games. Only winning 1 of 4 against the non-playoff-bound Devils hurt a bunch as well, especially considering all three losses were in regulation against the team leading the league with 18 OTLs.

The Canes can drop to 6th in the draft with a loss and a Canucks win today, or they can go for a 4-0 sweep of the Flyers.

Um, that isn't an interview. PK's just making excuses. He seemed aggitated, defensive. Ultimately, yes, for whatever reason he is definitely out of touch.
 
Note in Chip's article he starts out with the 'Big Hurt' and mentions Pitifulman's achiles heel and Staal the Elders INJURED KNEE. I'd wondered when this would come up.

It really pisses me off they can't mention Justin Peter's by name calling him 'another goalie'.
JR, you're just another GM and at this time a piss poor one a that. You're not even good at making excuses.

It's PK's team and he can pretty much do and say what he wants, but don't expect people to buy it or season tickets.

I mean, they're probably in the top 100 hockey teams in the world. That's pretty impressive, right?
 
So, who was really shocked to learn that Karmanos was a pompous jerk? This is a wealthy CEO type guy, who you know, doesn't care one little bit about what the "little people" think or say.
 
Karmanos has done a lot of good for this team, for hockey in Raleigh and for hockey in general and the NHL. But yes, he is a pompous jerk! I respect what he has done for all of the above and for pouring million$ into cancer research and care but after that stupid-assed "interview", I have lost most of my respect for the man himself. He's a one-man PR disaster!
 
Maybe it's me but I associate pompous(ness) with arrogance, he didn't seem arrogant in tone. Arrogant for saying what he said and thinking we'd buy it maybe... but his 'tone' to me was in fact that of someone clueless and defensive with regards.
Actually I find that he came off much more arrogant in tone when he was younger. THAT interview? Just deshelved, clueless and defensive. God knows why when he's being interviewed by one of his employees. Sheesh.
But the end result is the same, it definitely smarts to hear that coming from the owner. I mean, what does he take his fans for? (ok, maybe pompous, yeah)
