Habs Season Thread: 2023-24 Season

Only 4 goalies on that list have even one Cup ring. The top 3 guys all make a shit ton of money for zero championships and #4 on the list only won any Cups because he played with Crosby. Just goes to show how little goaltending matters anymore and why you should never spend too much of your cap on it.
Might want to ask TBay about their Conne Smythe winning goalie, who happens to make more than Price when adjusted for no Fla state tax

When you're allowed to go $18 million over the cap you can afford to waste money on goalies because you also have elite scorers.
What about the Cup 2-seasons ago when they weren’t over the cap?

Bottom line: there is no ONE WAY of team building a winner, but there are similarities in composition of Cup winning teams

I have news for you, Vaselevskiy stole games for the Lightning. They didn't win in spite of him. They won because of him.

So did Point , Kuch , and Hedman as a unit

TB`s bottom 6 was the difference to a cup ... we couldnt stop them

Pens , Blues , Hawks etc....won cups with good enough goalies .

Days of Roy are over

One single player isn't the reason Team A beats Team B, because you can take a whole bunch of examples to spin it as Team A beat Team B because Team A's #1 d-man was better than Team B's #1 d-man.

It's also why I never hold it against players who never won, unless they become noticeable worst when the playoffs come around. Sidney Crosby was probably robbed for 2 or 3 Cups because of The Choking Dog. But at the same time, Crosby was gifted one against Nashville when Pekka Rinne thought it would be a good idea to imitate The Choking Dog.

The Habs never lose a playoff series because of goaltending, they lose because they have a pop gun offense. The series that they win tend to be those in which Price dominates at one end while the other team's goalie chokes. But as soon as they come up against a team with goaltending good enough to negate the Habs' advantage it's game over because this team just never scores enough. The business model for the Habs since Price showed up is for him to stand on his head while his teammates eke out a 2-1 or 3-2 win. If he allows more than two goals in a game the Habs are probably losing it unless the other team completely shits the bed.

Only if the teams are closely matched up.

If there's a noticeable difference in talent between the teams, the goalie might steal a game, maybe two, but the better team almost always ends up winning.

A good team makes the goalie looks better and vice versa. No matter how good is your team, if your goalie is not giving you key saves, it will be really hard to win. Goalies can't make you win on their own, but they sure can make you lose.

What bias

Niemi, Billington, Murray etc......what goalie dominated and carried their team to a cup , cmon
All three.. Murray and Billington both were rookies, Billington stole game 7 in Boston for the Cup.. Murray was considered for the Conn Smyth. Niemi was solid for the Hawks in 2010.. don't kid yourself, goaltending is vital in the playoffs..
