Habs Season Thread: 2023-24 Season

For the cap, we have at least two significant long term extensions on deck and possibly retention on one shitty contract.
Dvorak + Armia will come off the books after 24-25 season, that $7.5M will go to Slaf

Savard’s $3.5M + Evans $1.7M will go towards Guhle’s deal w Beck slotting in as 4C

After 25-26 Matheson’s $4,875M frees up

After 26-27 Gallagher & Anderson’s $11M frees up

And oh yeah within 2-years the cap will skyrocket to $100M, especially w Utah coming on board

Simply put, I would rather spend on an RFA who will be here for a long time than an old veteran in decline and who will be gone before this team can be a serious contender.
But that legit veteran top-6 provides the ancillary benefit of helping develop young rostered players to new heights now …and help keep those assets that would need to be surrendered for an RFA for other additions or draft picks in 2-3 years time help keep replenishing the system

nope , he only lines his pockets for 1-2 years

That may very well end up happening, but such a move would involve giving away important assets whereas UFA is free except for cap space $urrendered
1. the top UFA's will never sign with Montreal because they can always make more elsewhere, thanks to taxes.
2. anything less than a top tier UFA is a player who is expensive and doesn't move the needle much, if at all.
3. signing UFA's is not a fast track to a Cup, it's a fast track to cap hell and perpetual mediocrity.

There is no evidence to support this theory. Some vets are just there to cash a cheque and don't give a shit about mentoring.

Its proven every July , biggest cap mistakes are made

Then ...ohhh fuck how do I unload this contract

Let’s go one by one

#1)
That’s not true for US Resident players who sign heavy bonus structured contracts

In fact that was the only reason Huberdeau reupped so quickly in Cgy after Fla trade. Alberta has lowest provincial taxes + his deal is heavily bonus structured. So bonuses are not viewed as income in most US states (incl his home in Fort Lauderdale) and his Cdn portion of taxes are at lowest taxation rate

It’s also why Tavares squabble with Revenue Canada right now about back taxes owed, is so important to Cdn teams. Tavares despite having US residency status, didn’t actually spend 6-months + 1-day in the US to meet residency requirements for US taxation per US / Canada tax treaty

It’s the Matthews effect, at $12M ($1M actual salary), even zero tax states would need to offer Stamkos upwards of $14M to match take home

#2
As Gorton stated the other day “they’re open to great UFAs” - Stamkos qualifies

#3
Two year term does not put Habs in cap hell, there’s plenty of space

That worked out well

Montreal is not Calgary in many ways, taxation rates being just one. Montreal is the highest-taxed NHL city or at least in the top 3.
