Habs Season Thread: Offseason 2025

Habsy, you have any friends who are dems? I don't know any liberals here, mostly because I play sports and hang around guys who know what a woman is and don't wear lipstick. I can always tell by the way someone looks how they lean politically. Rugged/Tough = Conservative, post op = liberal.
 
I have friends across the spectrum. They're logical and can debate points logically without using regurgitated media nonsense. I have liberal, libertarian, gay, trans, straight, not so straight although they keep claiming they are, rednecks, trumpers. You name it. How is that possible? I'm a true libertarian. I don't tell you how to live, you don't tell me how to live. What you do in your life is your business, not mine. I actually walk the talk.

Right or privilege is irrelevant. Both drunk driving homicide and shooting homicide are dealt with similarly AFTER the fact yet only guns are wanted gone. Cars give the drunkard the ability to kill again. There are thousands of cases of a drunk getting freed only to kill again behind the wheel. There are no cases of a mass shooter doing so. It's a double standard and illogical. On one you want to blame the weapon yet on the other the person. There is no difference, it's the person... always.

Look I get it in Canada. Canada wasn't born from the gun and it isn't woven into the fabric. The gun ship sailed 250 years ago in this country and you simply aren't changing it.

Oh, believe me, I am under no illusions about the US ever changing course on guns. The 2nd Amendment is sacrosanct, especially with Republicans in charge.

But....

The 1st Amendment regarding freedom of speech and freedom of the press?
The 4th, regarding unlawful search and seizure?
The 10th, regarding the division of powers between the states and the federal government?
The 13th, regarding the abolition of slavery?
The 14th, regarding the right to due process?
The 15th, regarding voting rights, specifically with regard to sex, race, color or creed?
The 19th, regarding women's voting rights?
The 22nd, regarding Presidential term limits?
The 25th, regarding the removal of a President from office when he goes insane...?

Yeah, not so interested in preserving those ones.
 
Like every country some are interested in preserving and some aren't. When you get less than 50% of the country turning out to vote, this is what you get.

If you're referring to the Holocaust your family wouldn't have been able to protect themselves from the Nazis without having their own panzers and howitzers. A few rifles wouldn't have saved them.

This is the same shit I hear from the militia people in the States who want to protect themselves from the gubment by arming themselves to the teeth and living in the backwoods eating freeze dried pizza. The government has tanks, fighter planes, and a literal army numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Ask David Koresh how things went for him and the Branch Dividians in Waco. They were heavily armed. They still ended up dead.

If your issue is mass shootings of course the easy thing to do is blame the gun. It's a shooting for petes sake. But I'll ask you again, a guy plows through a crowd with a truck, why aren't you blaming the truck?

I was given a gun when I was 14 years old because the expectation from my grandfather was that I would learn to hunt and provide meat for my family. I have three they are all registered locked kept safe, the ammunition stored separately. And they’re pretty fucking fun.

My issue are school massacres specifically. And I don’t think teenagers have the mental capacity and maturity for the responsibilities that comes with a gun.

The primary purpose of a gun is killing, and the ownership of such a powerful tool should be scrutinized. A truck main purpose is not killing. But if truck plowing becomes an issue, I also would look to do something about it.

I’m not against gun ownership, but I’m in favor of gun control and minimum age requirement.
