Habs sign Paul Byron to three-year, $3.5M deal

maybe it is about time our GM took a risk. He didn't even try to re-sign Vanek. Now granted he gave little for him and it was unlikely he would sign with us, but at least make him a god damn offer. When Price went down, his answer was Ben Ben Scrivens. He traded a former 1st rounder for John ****ing Scott.

Take on some salary.

He has no problem signing all these low end players yet was ramming arbitration up Subban's ass. I don't get his thinking. He takes care of the bottom guys before he does his top guys. It is a pattern that I cannot understand.

Those were true statements about those guys too.

This isn't an answer to any of our problems... but it's risk free.

I hear ya but it's the only type of risk MB has been willing to take. I'd love to see his RRSP account. Full of GICs I bet.

I prefer a line with all 3....these guys are signed for cheap, and they are all useful depth players

Agreed. This is a great deal.

Its exactly what I'm talking about when I've been talking about team building.

Get rid of the third and fourth liners making 3 million plus. (DD, Eller, Weise)

Get third and fourth liners, and 3rd pairing D and pay them all 1.0 - 1.5 million. Fill the bottom of the team super cheap.

Carr - JDLR - Byron
Hudon - Mitchell - Flynn
DSP

Then you can afford luxuries in Price's next deal, Stamkos, Subban, etc....

Thats how you do it in the cap world. Pay for elite talent... save money on the places where the upgrades to higher priced players only provide very marginal returns.

I want the guy who scores 40 goals instead of 25 in my top 6 and I'll pay for that. I don't want to pay to have the guy who scores 8 goals instead of 6.

Maybe because it's easier to fiddle around with scrubs. Keep in mind, MB isn't an experienced GM.

He has had four years on the job. I still say it is because he was a scrub and is always known as the 3rd guy on the Ville Emard Hurricanes behind Daigneault and Lemieux. He prefers the scrubs because he was one.

Teams were calling Habs about Byron, pending UFA. But Montreal wanted to keep him. New contract makes it official

There you go, he was a wanted man.

Bergevin needs to do something to help his top 6 this summer...

If you need to give Stamkos 12 mil, then so be it....worry about the cap later.

Stanley Cups winning teams like LA/CHI were supposedly in cap hell, but still managed to survive and win more Cups afterwards....it's not cap hell if you are spending it on top end talent

So were Flynn and Mitchell last year.

That is the thing i don't like, people say is cheap contract for Flynn, Mitchell, Byron. But still is around 4 M on cap. Your 4th line you can call up guys from minor for one or two spots. I am ok with one or two of these guys max not all 3. Specially they don't have really 4th liners profile(by their size).

Great, so it came to point people still keep praising Berg for signing a 4th liners?

Yeah, but how much less is the cap hit for a call up? 300K per player?
