I keep hearing that PK and Max Pac are to get serious consideration. Also, Plekanec and Markov (who doesn't even seem to want it)
My thoughts? At very first, I thought it would be a good idea to have a "bridge" captain in the person of Plekanec. But there are guys all over the league who were named captain earlier than 25. Subban is almost certainly going to spend his prime as a Hab. There really is nothing else to wait for.
There is no hockey market like Montreal, and I'm saying that from the Toronto area. At this point, I can't see the negatives. Even speaking french is not at issue as it relates to the other real candidates. They are not francophone and he is doing what he can to learn french.
Positives: media savvy, thick skin, hard worker, a "gamer" who can step up when they need a lift, can take the coach getting on his case, highly doubt the demands of being a captain affect him, will take heat off his teammates.
You also see more subtle signs like congratulating each teammate as they leave the ice after a win and controlling the music in the room. (right, Dion Phaneuf?) I think it's time to make a move to a longer term captain like most good teams do.
