Kyle Dubas named 17th GM of the Maple Leafs

I hope one of the first things dubas does is to tell shanahan to tell HNIC to get the 2 idiots (simpson and his buthole hughson) off the toronto airwaves.
And I hope (sorry MZ and zeke) that he steers away from a Carlson signing

think this is just ME advocating Carlson, not zeke.

I could see Polak or some iteration of him coming back. A big, mean, physical bottom pairing D-man who is tough to play against and can PK.

I mean, I'd be surprised if Polak specifically was back, but not if Babs is granted some sort of toy of his ilk.

these media folks are something else....grasping at conspiracy and disaster straws.

Can Dubas work with Babcock?
Is Shanahan taking the lead on everything?

Jesus.

Assuming Dubas is looking for help on RD who can play on top 4, I can't see Polak coming back, or us signing anyone like Polak.

I expect Rielly, Gardiner and Dermott to be among our top 4 next season. If Dubas gets us another top 4 D help (Carlson or whoever), then that rounds up the top 4 and pushes Zaitsev and Hainsey into bottom 6, which is where they can excel in. And we still have Borgman and Rosen as #7 and #8, not to mention Liljegren on the way in another 2-3 years. It makes no sense to sign Polak again or sign a similar version of Polak.

Let's give Borgman a shot as the 6/7. He'll hit, but he can skate and handle the puck too.

Shanny is clearly the lead on everything. The GM position has become an assistant job in many cases.

Out of Shanny's mouth at the presser, Kyle manages the day to day operations of the club. Shanny is there for support.

So while I agree in general that a trend which started with stud GM's demanding President titles and basically started shifting duties that were historically those of the GM up a level on the corporate ladder, that doesn't appear to be the case in Toronto.

GM's have always had to go up the ladder for large impact moves (big contracts and trades) even before this trend, so I think you're pretty heavily over stating it here. Shanny has been clear that he doesn't manage day to day operations of the club.

It operates just like any other company. The president and board have veto power on major changes

Not sure why anyone would think sports management would be run any different

Radko Gudas...

Philly wants to clear space (for a run at Tavares ironically enough) and has incoming kids (Sanheim and Morin) to fill the spots in the bottom half of their blueline.

Not a stud, not the answer on the right side but can make a competent break out pass and legitimately has minimal regard for human life, a trait we lack.

yeah I don't think Shanahan is in any way the GM here. He's a true President of hockey ops, not a guy making trade calls.

but it's true that more and more "presidents" are actually just GMs with bigger titles. not shanny though.

In fairness, there are degrees of autonomy that GM's have. For example just in Toronto, Masai is clearly, clearly the one running day to day operations for the Raptors (despite being the President, and a fully titled GM being in house), and Shapiro is slightly but only slightly less hands on with the Jays. Lou, and now Dubas have way more autonomy than Atkins and Webster have, with the same title.

I had always just assumed he was not really an NHLer and only around for his goonery, but if you've looked at the advanced metrics and they are okay, yeah, he'd be alright. to be honest though he's a little too much of a shitbag for my liking though.
