Laine v Matthews

And thats fine cause winning games and going deep in yhe playoffs without matthews sells more tickets than continuing to suck even if you have a home town kid
 
This isn't a discussion of a "hockey deal" this is a discussion of does Arizona need Matthew's enough off ice for the franchises long term health to make an insane offer.

What would a fair offer be? Probably 2 + domi + swap of lower 1st round picks.

But why would the leafs do a deal if they were not absolutely blown away by the offer?
 
I won't even think twice if we get the second pick tonight. He might well end up better than Matthews. (Although the media again is trying to create a story, Matthews is going 1st overall).
 
If the Habs luck out with the #2 pick, then I won't really give a damn if you guys, or Edmonton, or even Boston, wins the #1 pick.

And my answer to that question is no. They need to win games, make the playoffs and go on a run to energize a fan base and get people talking. Getting a hometown kid doesn't do as much for them as winning a few rounds in the playoffs would, and thats why overpaying talent wise doesn't make sense.
 
Would strongly disagree... they need something to get people to notice them as they don't have a fan base to energize currently.

And it's not like they're trying to go for a local 3rd liner. They would be trying to get a local star player. No, OEL + Laine for Matthews is probably too much, but maybe OEL + Puljujarvi for Matthews? That's a deal that could be tempting for both sides, depending who wins the #1 pick.

yup, no question, he's a good player with an elite skill set.
 
i think juolevi should be in the discussion with laien and pulujarvi. he, imo, outshined both at the wjcs and watching london play in the playoffs you see why his points totals aren't great - london's forwards are so good, the d never have the puck.

with less skill up front and more time on the puck his goal and assist totals would both go up, imo.

his hockey iq looks off the charts good; he's always in the right spot and does such a good job of pressuring the puck without giving up any ice. i think he's going to be really good.

Most scouts I talk to say Eichel and Matthews are quite comparable. Had Matthews been 2015 eligible, he'd likely have been consensus No. 3.

That isn't to say some scout or team wouldn't have Matthews ahead of Eichel, but most would suggest they're in precisely the same universe.
 
I don't disagree with most of that, but if you watch the 2 skate and don't put Matthews ahead of Eichel I don't know what you're watching. They're pretty damn identical other than that. Matthews is a gifted skater and Eichel, though he has an impressive top speed is slow off the start with a pretty awkward looking giraffe stride.

eichel had almost 60 points as a teenager... he's a stud.
 
Eichel looked pretty strong on his skates. Low center of gravity. He was very hard to get off the puck.

If we draft either Matthews or Laine how do they rank in our prospect pool?

Jesse Puljujarvi is the best player in this draft. His skill set is the perfect combination of Matthews and Laine. He has the size, heavy shot and flashiness Laine combined with the playmaking ability and compete level without the puck of Matthews. People rave about Laine's post WJC production in Liiga, but Puljujarvi quietly matched him step for step. Laine finished the year with 35 points in 41 games (0.85 ppg), while Puljujarvi had 25 points in 29 gp (0.85 ppg), including 9 points in 10 games in the playoffs playing through a lower body injury. Puljujarvi followed that up with 7 points in 4 games leading Finland to the 2nd junior gold medal of the year. Which brings us to the first Finland gold medal of the year and the previously mentioned WJC. Puljujarvi put up one of the best performances as a 17 year old at the WJC ever, and produced at a level only elite NHL hall of famers have.

He has been playing high level pro hockey since he was 16 years old, at a level few else his age has. Aside from the first half of this season in Liiga he has outproduced Patrik Laine at every single level they have played at (including the second half of the Liiga season, and playing on the same line at the WJC). Big, strong, fast, smart goal scoring winger, with elite hands and a Stamkos-esq one timer that can impact the outcome of games with and without the puck. He does everything at top speed and is praised for his work ethic and attitude off the ice. He is this generations Teemu Selanne/Marian Hossa.
