Laine v Matthews

Considering that Matthews will likely eventually end up playing with one of Nylander or Marner on his wing over the long-term, I think he'll be getting plenty of opportunities to unleash his own bomb of a shot.

One thing about Laine that has really begun to get to me, is he keeps saying he believes he should be drafted 1st overall, he believes he is the best player, he feels he's had a better year than 'all the other guys' .... blah blah blah.

Confident is a good thing, but there's a fine line between confidence and cocky, and if I am drafting a franchise player his weird, socially-awkward, and over-confident personality would sure rub me the wrong way.

Yeah, he's starting to look like a dick. I liked his odd interview during the draft lottery, but he's starting to go over the line.

I know Matthews interviews are rather dull, he reminds me a lot like Crosby in that regards. That said, he looks really professional with his answers.

Yes, Matthews is dull in comparison, but as a leader or a captain in the future, you have to be careful with your words. Sundin was dull. Crosby is dull. Toews is dull. Yet they are also confident and humble at the same time. That's the quality you're looking for in a franchise player.

Anyone else think the media would eat this kid alive in Toronto?

.@PatrikLaine29 just told me he'd compare Matthews and himself to Toews and Oveckin. Says will take him 5 yrs to be like Ovie @TSNHockey

The Toronto media will have a lot more fun with this kid than they ever did with Kessel.

And Laine isn't gonna care at all ... he's gonna continue to be awkward and say the wrong things and not be accountable for any of that. He'll let the vets on his team, his coach and his GM cleanup his mess.

I like his confidence, but yeah that kind of stuff doesn't go over well. I'm sure Matthews thinks the same things but doesn't say them. He is much more polished. He has been groomed to be the captain of a team like the Leafs for years. Laine is a hell of a player, and I would love to have him on the Leafs. The first time I saw him play at the WJC I immediately said this guy is going to score 500 goals in the NHL. Matthews is the kind of player decade long contenders are built around though.

He's so calm and cool. Can't wait for him to become a Leaf.
He is.

And man the combine tests look pretty insane. I don't believe any of these guys are out of shape, but still these tests are by no means a cakewalk for these guys who are borderline pro athletes already in their best shape

Yes I mean, as long as Laine doesn't play for my team, you do like to see some players bring some colours to the league. I loved OV for the same reason, but Laine takes it to another level because other than being confident / proud, this guy is also very socially awkward. He marches to the beat of his own drum and he really doesn't know, nor does he care, to connect with the media at a mutually understanding frequency.

And you can only call it confident for so long. If he is not Ovie in 5 years (and i don't think he will be) then you will no longer call that 'confidence'

No i think thats fine. I have no problem with him wanting to be Ovie. And from all accounts the kid has the work ethic. He should want to be Ovie. He should want to be one of the best players in the world. All of the best players in the world wanted to be one of the best players in the world and worked their asses off to get there. You can't get there without wanting it and believing in yourself.

The biggest reason prospects like Matthews and Laine are this good, this young is because they want to be the best and they've put in a ton of work.

Laine is going to be a great player.

Nothing wrong with wanting to be Ovie.

To tell the media world "I will be Ovie in 5 years" is a totally different thing.

Great prospect, going to be a really good player....but I think he's been reading too many of his Finnish press clippings, where he's a ****ing rock star right now.

Good news is we'll get to see who's better soon enough. Both kids will be in the NHL, in prime scoring situations, from the get-go.

Laine mouthing-off again today. Someone has to get a hold of him and say that's enough. The charm has now died.
He did mention "The Leafs Have A Tough Decision"-Maybe he's secretly terrified of living in Winnipeg.

The reality is he's incredibly goofy-looking and the act is looking a little sad now.
Matthews doesn't have to tell anyone he's the best. He knows he is and so does 90+% of people.
