Laine v Matthews

:lol You guys are really scraping at the bottom of the barrel now. Laine is fluently bilingual (unlike Matthews, btw), and was by all accounts a very good student.

You're also overblowing the "awkwardness" (please) and supposed character issues of Laine, who according to many is quite gregarious. But I guess whatever eases your uncertainty about taking Matthews at #1.

The hating on Laine is weird. There is no way I am deciding whether or not to draft a kid based on innocent comments made to the media as a 17 year old. It just makes no sense. IN that regard guys like McDavid and Matthews are just more polished. They've been groomed for this process.

Matthews is a better prospect, but Laine just had one of the best 17 year old seasons we've seen in recent memory. If we had the 2nd pick, or Matthews was two days older and in last years draft I would be thrilled with Laine. He has the talent to be the best goal scorer of the next generation.

Just to clarify my position. He's clearly the 2nd best prospect in this draft and Winnipeg would be insane to pass on him over what appears to be character issues. I do think we're going to see him being a problem in the future as far as attitude is concerned though.

Honestly I like his attitude. All he wants is to be the best, and he believes in himself. Thats fine with me. That is what you need to become one of the greats. Matthews for sure feels the exact same way he has just been coached and prepped for the interview process.

Its not like Laine is shitting on anyone else, or being negative, or being difficult to get along with. Yesterday they were talking about how him and Matthews like each other and have become friends through this process. You think Crosby or McDavid didn't think they could be one of the best and want to go first overall. They just gave the standard boring athlete answers that everyone usually complains about.

I find that many Euro guys are at least a bit weird on camera(our own Komarov for example, always short and on point but you can tell he doesn't really enjoy answering questions). They either don't know what to say or just try to keep it light with jokes because they're uncomfortable. To me this is very similar but a bit more extreme example. I think he'll learn how to be more professional and the whole attitude stuff will be a non-issue. It's a bit overblown imo.

I don't have a problem with Laine either. He's just giving his opinion when being asked and is confident. I would have been disappointed if he called himself the number 2 prospect. BTW, Matthews called Laine a "nice guy" twice in an interview with TSN radio a couple days ago.

Yeah. The more east you go in Europe, the stranger the guys.

Finland isn't really Eastern Europe though. It's much more culturally distinct and part of the Nordic nations more than anything.

I didn't say they were. I just meant that even the Nordic nations (that are a bit more east..east of Germany, France, Spain, England, Portugal, Italy) are kind of weird in my experience.
