Leaf Rumours

Franson's worth ~4 million tops, and we'd be gambling on his offensive potential to do that. Gunnarsson is a solid second pairing D and he got 3.15, so with Franson's extra offence I could see him getting a bit more than that, but it shouldn't be too much more.

So according to the TSN vids it looks like Naz may be getting a little frustrated with negotiations.

Definitely a change of heart from the last time he was asked about it.

It's pretty crazy how teams are so willing to dangle their RFAs out there - used to be that they were locked up before other teams were able to poach.

The risk, of course, is that another team will offer a ridiculous contract and force a team to consider matching it, or dumping the player for the compensatory picks.

In the cases of both Kadri and Franson, in order for a team to really push the Leafs into a tough position - one or both players would need to be offered salaries in the $5-$6mil range. Compenstation being either a 1st/3rd, or a 1st/2nd/3rd.

It's probably not the year for teams to consider these types of offer sheets, especially with the cap squeeze all teams are feeling.

Agreed, probably not the right year. But its probably not out of the realm of possibilities for a team who believes either Kadri or Franson will be worth that money sooner than later to overpay to get them.

Not to mention, it somewhat depends on the team, but in most cases a 1st/3rd would be a pretty terrible return for these guys.

I wouldn't be shocked if its term that is the issue with Kadri, he probably wants a long term deal (3-4 years), and the Leafs want a bridge deal (1-2 years) odds are both sides meet in the middle for something like a 3 year deal/10M (3.3M a year).

I think they'll both end up signing one years deals, which will really **** the team over next year. But at least we'll have Clarkson.

I wish Nonis would do something, a month away is a little close for comfort to have two of our better players without contracts.

Why does it always come back to Clarkson?

Liles is the issue. But more recently, they should have cut Fraser and not given Bernier $3m.

Because Clarkson was the most recent addition when the cap situation was already clear. Also he has by far the worst contract on the team and is just a depth player.

Should have cleared out space first to sign Clarkson and not left yourself struggling to keep way more important players.

Meh, I'd much rather deal with this at a 72 million dollar cap level than a 64 million dollar cap level. Hell, a Liles semi bounce back and he becomes tradeable with only 2 years worth of term remaining, and the Colby Tucker buy outs expiring...

Yes ****ing please. If both are able to have 82 game repeats of their 48 game season, **** it, pay them.

Yeah, but it would be tough to pay Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Franson, Kadri and reimer all in one offseason. That is legit 6 out of our 7 best players.

Getting Kadri and Franson to reasonable, long term deals this offseason would have been absolutely huge for this team. Far more important than anything else they have done this offseason.

With all of that said, I agree entirely. The time to add a "Clarkson" if we really needed one, in a season with an artificially depressed cap figure, is at the deadline when the 1-2 million in cap space you've squirrelled away allows you to add a 6-7 million dollar hockey player.

I fail to see how it screws us, I just added up the guys who have contracts next year and there is $31.775M tied up in cap space, if the cap goes up to 70 million like many people are predicting then leaves $38.225M to work with.

Key guys that need to be signed next year: Riemer, Kessel, Phaneuf, Gardiner. Guys like Kessel and Phaneuf are likely going to command $6.5-7M, Gardiner (depending on how he preforms this year) will likely ger $3.5-4M, Reimer in the hood of $2.9-3.5M. Lets assume they all get top dollar that totals up $21.5M which leaves $16.725M in cap space, more then enough to sign both Franson and Kadri plus room to sign a mid ranged UFA.

There are websites you can use to do this stuff, you know that right?

The Leafs have just shy of $35m committed next year already.

A potential 30 goal scorer who plays with grit is not a depth player.

And both Fraser and Bernier were signed after him, I believe.

You could also point to the Bolland pick up as unnecessary with it being time to give Colborne a shot.

There are many different expenditures to point to. And it's the smaller ones that have added up, like Fraser. And the inability to offload Liles.
