Maybe that's why he was gone so long. Takes a while to recover from a stabbing.

I don't have an issue with much of this, other than giving one of our youngsters a shot over Cleary.

Some offer sheet speculation on Cody Franson. Anything above $3.3 mil pretty sure Tor would take the 1rst rnd pick. Anything under...match.

which either means... this is a good omen and franson will be signed. or dreger is just once again leaning on his bad sources.
 
Obviously I'd rather have Franson here than not, but given the Leafs cap situation this might not be a bad time to sell high on Franson anyway.

I'm pretty sure he'll never be a top 10 scoring dman again, at least on this team. He is going to lose PP time to Gardiner and/or Rielly. And the guy still hasn't proven he can take a regular, non heavily sheltered shift. In the playoffs he looked great, but he also had some major, costly gaffs. And he also got to play with Gardiner who anyone would have looked good next to.

But really at the end of the day I'm just not sure the guy will take $2 mill a year.
 
He didn't really. 18.7% last year vs. 18.4% the year before. And I'd much rather have Gardiner or Rielly out there than Franson on the PP. Last year we ran with two dmen that were essentially just big shots. Its nice to have some high end playmaking ability back there. I'm not sure the PP unit could ever become a top PP without that kind of weapon on the blueline.

There was a big drop off from the top 2. Phaneuf, Franson had the advantage of working with the #1 forward line with helps a great deal, but those 2 were still really effective on it.

There's no way I'd give up Franson for a random 1st rnd pick. He's young, big, mobile, he hits and he can put up points. Just lock him up. If Rielly/Gardiner are great, and they push Franson out of an offensive role, then you trade him.
 
Don't we have >$4 million in cap space? Offer him 4/$3.7 and be done with it. That is something he strongly considers given that his current offer sits at a firm $2 million.
 
They really can't. That would leave them with $500k in cap space. They couldn't have any extra players, or call anyone up. Rielly couldn't make the team. Raymond couldn't make the team. If a Marlie has a great year they can't call him up. There is no flexibility to do anything really.

And for what? Your 4th dman? Maybe 5th or 6th dpending on Rielly and Ranger.
 
I feel for Franson, he got screwed in the trade, he got screwed in his first Leafs season by the coaches and twice now he's been squeezed for a contract.

Maybe Burke/Feaster trade for him, and makes him a #1 in Calgary.
 
Talk about undervaluing Franson.

The guy was maybe the best overall dman in the playoffs, pretty much equal to Gardiner and not sheltered by him, and definitely more impressive than Phaneuf.

To lose him for a pick would be a travesty, and would leave us with a bunch of similar clones on the blue line, none with what Franson brings to the table.
 
How the heck do you figure we don't have anything in the organization that can replace what Franson brings to the table? We have that in spades. Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly all can replace what he brings to the table offensively, if not more. Franson had a good year but he's not at all irreplaceable moving forward.
