Liles should see plenty of PP time for the Canes and will probably go right back to putting up 30-40 pts.
 
This will end up being a good deal for us....we traded a guy who couldn't crack our lineup often enough and was a similar styled Dman to what we already had, for a guy who will play every night and will be a 3rd or possibly even 2nd pairing guy for us.

Gives us more of the physical edge we needed....

I like the trade. It gives the Leafs an important dimension on defence physically and defensively that they were previously lacking.

Liles is probably the better defender between him and Gleason, but JML's skill set was unfortunately redundant given the existing personnel on the blue line. We should be a much tougher team to play against ultimately with this trade and for Liles it gives him a chance to be a top four defenceman again.

Well we got a guy that wasn't good enough to crack the Canes lineup.
 
That's not true. Gleason was hurt. He has played when healthy.

However we did trade a guy who couldn't crack the leafs roster for 2 seasons.

If Gleason is on your second pairing consistently you guys are in trouble. Serious mobility issues on that guy.

He was third in ice time for the Canes last year and 1st in PK mins.....he was a top four Dman for them last year.


To think we didn't benefit from just adding him for a guy who couldn't crack our lineup the last two seasons, is silly.
 
Liles, Dennis Robertson to Canes for Tim Gleason

The Toronto Maple Leafs have shored up their defence, acquiring Tim Gleason from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenceman John-Michael Liles and prospect blueliner Dennis Robertson.

The 30-year-old Gleason has one assist in 17 games with the Hurricanes in the 2013-14 NHL season.

A veteran of 10 NHL seasons, Gleason has scored 15 goals and 113 assists in 616 career games with the Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings. He was originally drafted 23rd overall at the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

Gleason has two years remaining on his contract after 2013-14 worth an average annual value of $4 million.

Liles, 33, has split this season between the Maple Leafs and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. In six games with the Leafs this season he has posted a minus-2 rating.

Shame to lose Liles, while Franson keeps gifting goals to the opposition, but at least Gleason, (former minors teammate of Spetzky, btw), will add some veteran presence to our blue line.

If he's getting top 4 mins, it'd be to be a stay at home Dman so one of Reilly or Gardiner could play more wide open.


....but I suspect it's a moot point, he was brought in to bolster our bottom pair, imo (potentially significantly if he returns to his old form.)
